Winter NAMM 2011

Jan 13 Jan 16

Anaheim Convention Center
800 West Katella Avenue – Anaheim, CA

Woadside wockets.

Hey Kids! I have my marching orders from Cap’n Joe, so it must be that time again. (Yeah, he wanted me to march. Figured I drove last year, ambulation must be next. I begged though, and he relented, so I can go back to flying. I think it’s only because he wanted me to get groped.)

But enough of that stuff – what time is it? Eh?

Ah cain’t hear yewwwwwwww…

NAMMtime, that’s what time it is, the annual biggest US gathering of the international musical instrument business, with thousands of vendors on multiple floors of the Anaheim convention center: as the announcer said at Woodstock, “three days of fun and music.” (Only it’s four-and-a-half days, but who’s counting?) It’s where the manufacturers, publishers, distributors, inventors, dreamers, and schemers set up everything from a folding table with a vinyl banner to a sprawling suite of elaborate displays just to tempt dealers with their tried and true, and their latest and greatest. OEM folks are there to pitch their wares and make connections with manufacturers. Vendors set the marketing theme for their entire upcoming year and dealers get stocked up.

It’s a big deal for a number of reasons. The convention goes back decades, creating historical continuity in an industry that lives half in the past and half in the sci-fi future. The energy generated by so many vendors, so many dealers, and so many showgoers makes NAMM the primary engine moving the stuff we all love from manufacture into our hands. It’s where dealers from mom-n-pop to the mail-order and e-tail giants see the new gear and decide what to order – some “buy the booth” so that the instruments from NAMM themselves end up in our hands. But even otherwise, it’s not going too far to say that virtually the entire music business passes through NAMMaheim.

To attend is to subject yourself to a cross between the biggest candy store you can imagine, a chaotic exotic bazaar, and the state fair – with an endless midway. It’s a feast of sound, light, color; a teeming cauldron of human energy; a exhausting non-stop assault on the senses – and, it must be said, something not to miss if you have the chance to go.

The good folks at Gretsch always take NAMM shows as an opportunity to shine the light on the artists past and present who have both given Gretsch its fabled heritage – and contributed so much to the musical culture of our era. The genres in which Gretsch has played a major role thread together into a tapestry telling the history of pop music since the late 40s. Western swing, gypsy, jazz, and country came together in Chet Atkins. Chet influenced rockabilly and inspired Duane Eddy – who in turn influenced surf and the private-eye and spaghetti western sound. Chet, Duane, and early rock & roll (abilly) had an enormous impact on The Beatles…who imprinted 60s pop with its range of Gretschketeers through the psychedelic era. Stills and Young managed between them to bridge hippie rock and the punk reaction to classic rock – and there was Gretsch, front and center for Zoom punk and Cult new wave. Stand back for the second coming of rockabilly, in glam-punk drag, with Stray Cats leading a 25-year expedition into the roots and spawning whole flocks of hyphenated -billies, from psycho to the new punk. Back in the mainstream of rock and pop, Gretsch shows up onstage with Jack White, Fallout Boy, and Katy Perry.

Over the past several years, Gretsch has honored an assortment of these artists and genres at NAMM shows – both through the introduction of signature and tribute guitars and by featuring the performers. At WinterNAMM 2007, Chet’s endorsement came back and his models (the Nashville and Country Gentleman) were featured. 2008 was Gretsch’s 125th Anniversary, and Bobby Gibson gave Chet a lot of play, while Rosie Flores and the Hot Rod Trio represented roots-and-billy; the David Lee Falcon highlighted the modern rockabilly-punk-everything fusion of The Shack Shakers, Steve Hunter covered both classic rock and jazz, and the G-Love CVT sig model was introduced.

At SummerNAMM 2008, Billy Zoom was on hand in Nashville for the introduction of his Custom Shop Tribute Silver Jet. WinterNAMM 2009 brought a rockabilly explosion with Hot Rod Lincoln, the Lee Rocker Band, the Brophy Dale Band, the Hot Rod Trio, Billy Zoom’s band, the High Rollers, the Cadillac Angels, and Lynda Kay. Classic rock was represented by the Top Off ZZ Top tribute band; Civet rocked contemporary punk, Joao Erbetta showed off his Brazilian-tinged surf-twang instro, we interviewed Brian Adams guitarist Keith Scott about his signature model – and the Stump-o-Matic CVT was introduced with Fallout Boy Patrick Stump.

But that didn’t cover enough bases! Last January at WinterNAMM ‘09, new Gretsch artist Paul Pigat and Cousin Harley were featured, along with the Hunter-Carducci Blues Band, and we had rockabilly and classic country roots from The Wild Ones, Hot Rod Trio, Hot Rod Lincoln, and Lynda Kay. We also had the special treats of the Tim Armstrong Electromatic introduction (along with Rancid’s door-bustin’ performance at the booth), and the announcement of Duane Eddy’s return to Gretsch with his larger-than-life performance at Deke Dickerson’s Guitar Geek Fest.

See how all that works? Artists and eras honored and highlighted in turn, Gretsch acknowledging its debts to the people who put it on the map, and celebrating the music of those artists and their influence on pop culture.

So what’s up for WinterNAMM ‘11? Where’s the spotlight? On a certain ol’ black Gretsch which was George Harrison’s first good electric guitar, and which carried him from Hamburg through the Cavern to the first Beatles albums. It’s hard to overstate the importance of the Beatles to Gretsch in the sixties, and this first-ever Harrison-endorsed guitar is major big deal for both Gretsch and the Harrison family.

We already know the Custom Shop has created a limited run of accurate “relic” Dynasonic Duo Jet Tributes. We’ll learn much more of the story at the show – and see a small museum’s worth of you-can-only-see-it-here memorabilia loaned by the family – so I won’t go on much about it now. Except to say we know the guitar originally came from Manny’s in New York City: there’s no way to know, but I like to think the guitar could have been part of Gretsch’s NAMM display and that Manny (always a big dealer) bought the booth. So in a roundabout, conceptual sense – what better place than NAMM to bring the story full circle?

My travels begin early next Wednesday morning from Louisville. I’ll be in Anaheim early Wednesday afternoon – and though NAMM doesn’t officially begin till Thursday, the Harrison Tribute will be rolled out at an exclusive dealer event Wednesday night. Coverage of the show will begin then with a perspective you can’t get anywhere else – and who knows what the party will hold over the rest of NAMMweek?

We got some plans. See you here then.
