Balto-DC Roundup 2012
Harford Park Community Association Center
Updates
Somewhat Belated Semi-Official Coverage...
Days late, dollars short, too much life and too little me – but I made the Balto-DC Roundup on behalf of the GDP, to tell the story at least from my perspective. A thanks to Paul FrequentFlyer Overly and Joe Carducci for the invitation. It’s Sunday afternoon, the day after the event, as I write. I’m waiting in the lobby of a hotel on Yellow Brick Road in Rosedale (you …
Thanks for leading another Round-Up effort FF909. I am doing my best to recruit another local Gretsch player from my area to join the forum and attend this event.
SWAH-VAY
Paul, I’m planning on being there again! Fun times for all…
LAst event was great. I’m really bummed that I didn’t get a portrait taken with my family heirloom DuoJet. But I’m stoked for the next even, because I just bought another (modern) Silver Jet yesterday! I’ll be there again.
Thanks for the effort it takes to put this together. I live in Cecil County, and I travel a lot during the week for business, but if there is something I can do to help, let me know. I can bring gear for the jam (PA, amps, etc) also.
Thanks!!
Hey, guys, thanks for weighing in! I’m working on a few cool things for this year’s Roundup. If I can make them happen, I’ll announce them here.
KIM FALCON will be in attendance this year!
Gentlemen, start your engines.
3 months and counting…
Should I bring the 1953 Yikes! Jet?
45 Days and Counting…
Absolutely bring the ‘53 Yikes Jet! It’s famous, you know. Legendary, even. :-D
Paul/FF909
I will see if I can make this happen. If so the 54’ will be traveling down for all to play and hear.
Fred, that would be Awesome in High Orbit!
We are charging “admission” this year. It’s been free the first two years, and it’s actually not much of a charge this year. We’re doing this for several reasons:
To keep the riff-raff out. Those who were there last year (either in person or via streaming) got a sense of what opening the doors to… aaahh, unvetted attendees can bring. Several problems arose last year, and all of them were about non-GDP members that didn’t know anyone.
To manage the t-shirts better. Virtually everyone buys a t-shirt anyway, so the cost of the t-shirt is rolled into the admission fee… in fact, it’s about half of the admission charge. And the first two years, we’ve had confusion at distribution time, and we ended up last year with a few folks who didn’t get a t-shirt. Doing it this way will organize us much better.
To ensure high-quality swag! The remainder of the admission fee will help (but not completely) pay for other event goodies, most of which you’ll be taking home with you. Nice trinkets and chow. We’re known for them. The organizers have been able to cover all costs the first two years, but late last year Mr. Spudnut had an expensive hospital stay that ate into the Fun Fund around here, if you know what I mean.
OK, “How much?” you’re wondering. $20. Not awful, I don’t think, but if it’s a barrier to your attending, please e-mail me and we’ll sort out what we can do. If you plan to bring family, also e-mail me, so we can work out a group rate.
We need to get as many folks to pay in advance as possible, so we can get a close-to-accurate t-shirt order placed. We can do this by PayPal. I’m setting up an account named “BaltoDCRoundupATverizonDOTnet” (convert the AT and the DOT to ampersand and period, respectively, to make it functional on PayPal or to e-mail me about the event) that should be activated by midweek. If you pay via PayPal, please be sure to include your t-shirt size in the message.
You’ll be getting e-mail acknowledgements from me and from PayPal on the payment. It will be good to print one of them out and use like a ticket “at the door” on the 31st, because we’ll have your stuff waiting for you when you arrive.
Let me know if you want to pay in advance by another method. Checks or money orders will be fine. I’ll send you a physical address to which you may mail.
If you want to pay at the door, that’s OK, but we really need to know in advance that you are coming for t-shirt purposes, so please e-mail me. You can show up out of the blue on Saturday if you like, but we cannot guarantee a t-shirt.
I hope this works for everyone. We’re lining up a great time, but it won’t be great unless you are there!
Some of the text I just posted looks wacky and cut-off. If you want to read it all (the cut-off stuff isn’t actually that essential), it’s on the discussion thread.
Hey, this is important for you jammin’ cats and kitties:
Joe Carey is going to be with us for the third consecutive year, and will again be bassmeister-in-residence for those who need someone to play Big Notes. He knows about 100,000 songs, but the songs you want to play may not be among them. He’ll be happy to learn them, if he knows what they are.
So please do what Brian_66 has done: use the PLAYLIST SUGGESTIONS feature here (check for it on the menu at the left) to make your needs and hearts’ desires known.
Otherwise, you’ll have to be as good as Jack White or embarrass yourself because you aren’t. :-)
Hey FF909, my lads and I would still like to play a 4 or 5 song set if possible. We are looking to play with to mics, two guitars, one bass and one drummer. Our whole set-list has changed since my initial recommendations but I think we have a better mix of songs in store for you all this time. Also, we have a brand spanking new bass player (son’s girlfriend) … so if things fall through, we may need to tap into your bass guy. Thanks! Brian_66
Hey, Brian,
You’re on the hook to lead off the loud electric proceedings! Joe checked out the Black Keys tunes already, so those can be a fallback. Not a bad idea to add the other songs you plan to play!
Paul/FF909
Great, thanks FF909! We are still fine tuning what songs we want to play and trying to balance that with some easy ones for our beginner bass player to play along. For the other more challenging songs, we would definitely like to call on Joe to help us out. We’ll finalize our playlist and update everybody in the next few days.
Looks like I’m going. See you all there!
All right, UG! Bringing the missus?
Woo Whoo! Uncle Grumpy will be in the house! Hey John, do you want to trade guitars for a song or two? I’ve always wanted to see and hear what a double cut Jet was like.
I’m flying solo boy’s! Brian play it as much as you want. By then it will be all mine! I should be able to pay it off next week. I think I’ll be there for “the night before”. Can’t wait!
I’ll be there. I’m sending you the Paypal payment now. I’ll be playing lead guitar on a weezer song for Brian66 and his son(s)? I’d like to add songs to the playlist, but how do I do it? I wasn’t planning on bringing my photo gear this year so I could just enjoy the event instead of feeling like I was working the entire time, but it’s been a dream of mine to photograph Ms. Falcon. Not sure if she’d let me take photos of her, but I’d kick myself in the butt if she said ok and I left my gear in NJ. Kim and I have spoken about photo shoots in the past and she was down for them, but the logistics haven’t worked out. Paul, do you think I should bring my photo studio gear or just come with my guitar and amp? You’re running this shindig, so I thought I’d ask. Thanks, Chris
Hey, Chris, if Kim’s good with a session, that’s all the permission you need, as far as I’m concerned!
I would not recommend just showing up with your photo gear and hoping she’ll want to do it on the spot. That could lead to disappointment. Catch up with her in advance to plan it out (via Facebook), bearing in mind that she may not have a lot of time to devote. Efficiency and preparation will be key.
If Kim doesn’t feel she’ll have time to do a proper job of a photo session, yeah, leave the photo studio gear at the house and spend the day rocking!
To add to the playlist, just click on the “Playlist suggestions” menu item on the left under Balto-DC Roundup 2012. It’ll give you some fields to fill in. Very intuitive!
My ideas for a playlist have been a moving target, but I think we are very close to settling for the set-list for the “House of Burgess” opening set. Here’s what we have in line so far:
“Saturday Morning” by EELs Brian B. - vocals / rhythm guitrar Ben B. - lead guitrar Ethan B. - drums Destiny - bass (maybe …) OPEN - additional rhythm guitar
“Undone (The Sewater Song)” by Weezer Ben B. - vocals / rhythm guitrar Brian B. - lead guitrar Ethan B. - drums Destiny - bass (maybe …) Wenzel - lead guitar SOLOs
“Lonely Boy” by The Black Keys Brian B. - vocals / rhythm guitrar Ben B. - lead guitrar Ethan B. - drums Destiny - bass (maybe …) OPEN - additional rhythm guitar OPEN - backing vocals
“12:51” by The Strokes Ben B. - vocals / rhythm guitrar Brian B. - lead guitrar Ethan B. - drums Destiny - bass (maybe … but probably Joe) OPEN - additional rhythm guitar
“Reptilia” by The Strokes Ben B. - vocals / rhythm guitrar Brian B. - lead guitrar Ethan B. - drums Joe- bass OPEN - additional lead guitar for SOLO
“Back in the U.S.S.R.” by The Beatles Brian B. - vocals / rhythm guitrar Ben B. - lead guitrar Ethan B. - drums Joe- bass OPEN - keyboards OPEN - backing vocals
Destiny is a very brand new bass player (son’s girlfriend) so we are grateful that Joe will be on hand to back us up on the more challenging bass lines.
Feel free for anybody to take any of the “OPEN” slots and send me a PM. I’ll update this post as folks sign-up.
Lastly, tonight I’ll post a link HERE to a project folder that has the song sheets and MP3’s for these tunes so folks can start practicing.
Thanks FF909 for letting me and my boys get some play time in. We look forward to filling our our ad-hoc band with some other folks here and hope we don’t butcher these songs too bad. I’m pretty certain we are going to have a fun time trying :)
I sent her a message on Facebook, but I don’t know how often or if she checks her messages?
Here is the link for all the song sheets and MP3s for the House of Burgess opening set:
http://www.box.com/s/plqu1g37essmfcesgkcj
Let me know if anybody wants to jump in and play in any of the open slots listed above.
Paul, you said it’s in the upper corner, but I don’t see anything interactive on this page to add playlists. Is it on another website???
Disregard Paul, I figured it out.
Brian, I would like to play that rhythm on “Lonely Boy” if it’s still open.
Sounds good Unclegrumpy. I think what we’ll see about doing is have an open amp available for whoever the “guest player” for that song. Wenzel will be playing the solo for “Undone” and maybe you can just plug into the same amp he plays on to save time between songs. We’ll talk more as the Round-up approaches.
Bottom line: I’m looking forward to playing with you again!
You guys forget how many amps are onstage at Balto-DC every year? :-)
That’s what I was thinking.
can someone show me on a map where this joint is in american? :)
Tavo, you thinking of tripping to the east coast?
One of the highlights for me at the Gretsch Round-Ups is plugging into somebody’s else amp becuase it ALWAYS sounds much better than my amp at home!
I’m bringing my little suitcase amp just for fun.
Paul, I can only stay for Friday since I forgot I have a photography class I have to teach on Saturday. :-( What time do the festivities start on Friday? I’ll be there first thing in the morning.
Well, I just read the heading up above. Looks like I won’t be able to make it this year guys. Man, that sucks… Have fun ya’ll…
Harford Park Community Association Center – Baltimore (Parkville), Maryland
Maryland. It’s a state, Tavo.

Ok, so I was able to swing an alternate instructor to teach for me. I’ll be there!
I see very nice!! Thanks Deed.
ps. I was in Annapolis once when I was 20. I was very lost, but this was long before google maps. :)
Hey, Chris, that’s a relief. I don’t want you to miss this one.
Deed, thank you for posting the map link!
Tavo, Deed: if you’re on this side of the country that weekend, you simply must pop in. We’ll have people you know, people you’d love to meet, a coupla guitars, music, swag, prizes, displays and demonstrations, a giant 45 RPM record, and a dog. A proven recipe for a good time!
Are we there yet?
Hey Paul, sent ya a pm on FaceBook. Looking forward to seeing everyone there at the Roundup!
Extending the advance registration/t-shirt ordering deadline until… aaahh, I place the order! (Either Friday or Monday)
Remember: you do not have to pay in advance, but if you’re coming, it will be prudent to let me know that ASAP, and your t-shirt size. I will probably order 7 or 8 “uncommitted” t-shirts for walk-up attendees. But I’m only ordering those in Large and Extra Large, and… hey, there’s no reason to take a chance on us running out of t-shirts before you get there or not having your size, when you can just send me an e-mail today, right? As soon as I get a design proof from LogoDogz, you’ll get a peek.
Hey Paul- For Neal and me, we’ll pick a couple of these to do for our set: - Walkin’ the Dog- Otis Rush - Melissa- Allman Bros - Thrill is Gone- BB King - All your love I miss lovin’ - Otis Rush - Keep on lovin me baby- Otis Rush/ Magic Sam/ Paladins - Badge- Cream - Bell Bottom Blues- Derek and the Dominos - Little Sister- Elvis (Hey Redrocker- wanna join on this one ?)
Thanks! Matt
address? times? please.
will you be broadcasting on ustream? sadly i cant make your party.
Yes, the plans are to stream.
Are we there yet?
I thought streaming was out?
How ‘bout some more Allman Bros.
Whipping Post
Blue Sky
And NJ Bob, feel like singing some Fooled around?
Also, I wanna go on record that I hate the streaming! If you want to know what it’s all about then come out and participate. If you live to far away MOVE. If you don’t wanna move then host your own event.
Okay, rant over I accept that it must be done, kinda.
14 days, 9 hours, 10 minutes, and counting….
Who’s bringing what amp? And are they available to play our set with? We have 4 or5 people coming and the van is already going to be full with guitars. We’ve got 2 pedal boards (of sorts) and I”’ bring an extension cord and power strip as well.
The House of Burgess opening set should be a rocking good start to the day!
Amps from Flyer Central, available to all players, are Fenders and include:
1966 Super Reverb 1968 Showman Reverb 1968(?) Dual Showman Reverb Modern Twin Reverb Custom 15 Modern Princeton Reverb
The Princeton and my slightly-modded Gretsch 5222 will be used in the Boutique Corner.
OK, the text formatting here is nonintuitive and inadequate and I cannot edit. Let me try the list again:
1966 Super Reverb
1968 Showman Reverb
1968(?)Dual Showman Reverb
Modern Twin Reverb Custom 15
Modern Princeton Reverb
Cool! Thanks Paul. I really look forward to hearing these amps and how they are set-up.
Hey Paul — don’t forget my Gretsch Variety! (I really do miss it) :-)
I’ll be bringing your Showmutant.
And can I still have the couch?
Songs I’ll be working up:
and ,maybe some JD McPherson stuff if anyone’s into that (North Side Gal, Scratchin’ Circles)
Oh and yeah, Matt — just saw your post — would love to do Little Sister ;-)
Hey, Paul,
I didn’t forget the Variety — I just didn’t feel authorized to represent its possible involvement in the Roundup!
Missing my Mutie, too, but having a grand time with the Variety.
Couch is yours!
The Red Bees will happily back you on “A Song For You,” and I’m behind you (along with others, possibly) on “Hot Burrito #1.” Note to potential joiners-in on the latter: we do it in D, not the original key (which I think is F).
Paul/FF909
Hey Paul I knew you didn’t — I just couldn’t help myself ;-)
Great on the Bees backing vocals and I’ll figure out a way to post the HB#1 chords here for those who want to join in since it’s a tad tricky.
Chords for Hot Burrito #1 are here:
http://www.paulshannonphotography.com/Site/Hot_Burrito_1.html
Looking forward to seeing/re-meeting you guys again.
Also — a good excuse to dust the Polytone. :)
-Phil D.
Along with Paul/FF’s Princeton and G5222 amps, I’ll have my MusicMan 212-65 and Peavey Delta Blues set up for the Boutique Corner.
Guitars: both my G5120s. I’ll bring an acoustic in case I get ballsy, and if anyone’s interested in the Epi ‘61 Ltd Casino, let me know and I’ll bring that too.
I talked to my venue contact over the weekend, and it looks like we will NOT be streaming this time. We were relying on a guy with some wireless 3G technology doo-dads last year — the best thing we could get, as the venue itself does not have Internet access — and were faced with a repeat of that process. As it turns out, that guy is not available to help us out this year.
Sooo… what we’ll probably do is video some select things and post them somewhere, somehow, somewhen, for your enjoyment. I doubt that you’ll miss the dead air and the breathtaking guitar-tuning adventures, anyway. ;-)
Paul, can you please post the address here? I can’t find it in the “INFO” section.
I met a cool PRS guitar fella this past weekend. He said he’s interested in Gretsch but I don’t think he has ever tried one. I told him about this event and welcomed him to come and to at least try some of my guitars.
If he does make it, I will cover his cost.
Hey, Brian,
I have not been able to make additions to the “Info” section — sorry! I’ve told Bax about the problem. There’s a lot of stuff I’d like to post up top for quick reference, but I can’t.
It’s at 2522 Linwood Road, Baltimore, MD 21234. You can use the link Deed provided above — that’ll get you there (although it’s showing a 2500 address — you can’t miss the Community Center once you get on the block. It’s on the right, just a few houses down from the intersection.)
Aaaahh, thanks, Bax!
Actually, I need to amend the above to:
Aaaahh, thanks Ric12string!
Well … because there are two threads about the event … I will copy and paste my last post to the other …
Hey friends,
I just jammed with an old guitar compadre tonight… A guy that I have been encouraging to come to one of these events for a long time … It has always fallen apart on his side because of work etc. / much to his disappointment …
Well, it looks like he is finally going to be able to make it this time … I already paid for his t-shirt …
This guy is phenomenal but very humble …
We have not played together much lately because of our busy work schedules … That said, our jam tonight was super … We are very simpatico and good at winging it … We will play a total improv. set … We would love to have any bass, drummers, other guitarists join in …
Basically we will pick a key to start in and see where it goes from there …
Think Grateful Dead !
I’m psyched!
57 Chet
It’ll be great to finally meet your amigo, Nick!
This is going to be a major gas.
I can’t wait for this event!
Hi, everyone! I’m new to this board, but already know many of you from past events. Anyway, I’m also looking forward to this roundup; please consider me for all your somewhat-less-than-world-class drumming needs! :o)
Whoo Hoo, we’ve been practicing our set-list and looking forward to jamming with you all! Looking forward to hearing the Weezer solo Wenzel!
I think we have some new faces showing up too. I recently met a PRS guitar guy who said he was interested in Gretsch guitars so I told him about this event. Please be sure to give him a warm welcome. His name is Dave and he recently joined this forum as “Da_Guitarhunter”.
Made a slight update to the “Reptilia” cover by The Strokes. All files (song sheets and MP3s) for The House of Burgess are located at:
http://www.box.com/s/plqu1g37essmfcesgkcj
See you all Saturday! We still have room for hand-clappers, keys, and backing vocals if you want to join us in this opening set.
3PM Tuesday = 91 hours to Roundup and counting…it is almost here, folks!
Putting new strings on all the guitars now. Can’t wait! Paul, I sent you an email. I’ll be there Friday.
Thanks for the Intro Brian, I’m lookin forward to meeting all of you at the Roundup, maybe I’ll win me a Geetar with Grestch on the Headstock too (that would be SWEEEEEET)
This coming weekend… It’s Balto-DC ROUNDUP time! See ya there!
Yeah buddy!! Just finished polishing my guitars. Now I gotta learn how to play.
Curt, I’m bringing my Hagstrom. I need some advice on the neck binding.
Hey, there’s gonna be a dog there? Aw man…
Springtime Roundup…gonna be great.
Just picked up my silver falcon from the shop! Just in time for Saturday! She’s got new pups, and a straight neck, and and freshly polished, and and and she’s all set up! Can’t wait to introduce her(and me) to you guys!
There are going to be some great guitars there this weekend. Some nice people as well. :)
Damn. My ‘53 Duo Jet won’t be ready for Saturday. You just can’t rush lacquer….
Disappointing news, Mark, but don’t let that slow YOU down. Still plenty of fun to be had!
Looks like the infamous Yikes! Jet will be in attendance, y’all.
And that ain’t all… now, pay close attention to the next comment.
What!!??
Rocky from Streetsounds in Brooklyn, NY, the busiest Gretsch dealer on Planet Earth, will be in the house on Saturday. And he’s bringing stuff. But he wants to know what stuff to bring.
So here’s the question: if Rocky comes with guitars to sell at a “crazy insane cheap price” (his words, and if you’ve bought from Rocky, you know what this means) what would you attendees like to see for sale on Saturday? What would you like to try out?
Can you believe you’re reading this? Hell, I can hardly believe I’m typing it. But it’s real.
Speak up and speak fast! He’s got to load his wagon!
Can’t buy one but I would love to try a new White Falcon. Maybe a Jumbo Rancher.
Tell Rocky I’m looking for a deal on a F’tron loaded Gretsch, preferably hollowbody.
You gotta be kidding me. I just bought a Gibson Firebird when I have equal GAS for the White Penguin at his shop. I was trying to get off work to make the trip down. Only if I had known……. Dammit!!!
Hey, NJDevil,
This all came up just yesterday afternoon. At first, Rocky was only going to buzz down briefly (and empty-handed) because of a prior commitment. He surprised us with this news.
You gotta make the trip down! It’s going to be a great time. And maybe something creative can happen on the deal front.
One quirk in Streetsounds’ business is that they accept PayPal, but not direct credit cards. So, if you have a smart phone, you can do the payment deal that way (or run to my house and use the computer!).
Of course, cash always works.
If there’s a guitar you want, I need to know by noon Friday so that Rocky will have time to pull it from inventory. He will be able to fit two or three guitars in the car. Looks like a 6120 will make the trip for sure.
Important to know: Rocky does have to be in NYC by 6:00 PM, so he is going to have to leave between 2:30 and 3:00. Come early to make deals!
6129 1959LTV
Or a dyna DuoJet.
That should read 6120, not 6129. (can’t edit these posts)
If Rocky can fit an amp in his car, and has one of the new Fender Excelsiors, a lot of folks are interested in those (including me).
What’s the chow plan? Is food & drink part of the admittance fee ot should we all bring a covered dish and some sodas (or beer?)?
Hey, Brian,
Food is in the deal. We also have an array of sodas and bottled water. If your soda preference is for something exotic, feel free to bring your own. And it is a bring-your-own beer proposition.
I’ll pick up some beer on the way down.
Another shipment arrived this morning.
Looks like we’ll be giving away a lot of guitars.
If you are on the fence about attending, get off the fence. Come to this party!
Sure wish we could be there, sounds like it’s gonna be a total blast. Tell Joe C we’ll see him in Vegas!!
we’ll all want lots of pictures from this Balto blowout…did you know that Fred Gretsch has been on Twitter letting folks know all about it?
I’ll be there with the 1953 Yikes! Jet
Rocking, e-classics! See you there!
Christmas morning….up at 5:45, looking forward to the Roundup!
I came, I saw, I enjoyed it! See you guys next year!
Oh, ya……I forgot to say thanks Paul!
I stayed as long as I could. I know there are still people there now, still enjoying it! What a great time. Thanks again to Paul for doing this over and over again. Thanks to Brian66 and crew for letting me jam with them. Thanks to the rest of “The Sparkles”, the all-Silver Jet band! Thanks for Joe C and Kim F for showing up. Great times.
Wow, what a fun day! Thanks to FF909 (Paul) for coordinating such a good time. I really enjoyed playing with a lot of different folks today and can’t wait for the next get-together.
I’ll have a few videos to post soon …
Ya know what they say about what you have when there aren’t any pics to prove it, don’tcha?
(Hint, hint.)
Here’s a batch of pics:

Videos to follow tomorrow …
Nice, Brian. Thanks for posting the pics. I grabbed some copies.
Hey Shmockiebaby (Mark), I really enjoyed jamming with you. You really helped us out with our set-list! See you next time!
What a fun time everyone had! I know I did anyway. Thanks to Paul for putting this on, catering, door lady, Joe C and Tim (Proteus). It was really nice hanging out with all of my friends again. Chris
Chris, thanks for joining us in playing some tunes! Your Beatles stuff that you played later on sounded great as usual.
