Gretsch guitars: 6103 Streamliner

Gretsch
6103 Streamliner

The 6102 and 6103 Streamliners were primarily an attempt to take the perfectly good 6123 Monkees model and make it into something people would want to buy.

In other words, they're very close to a 6123, minus the Monkee business.

There are, however, a few differences worth noting: Where the 6123 had a unique fretboard with new-classic inlays on both the treble and bass sides of the neck, the Streamliner used the usual bass-side-only setup Gretsch was traditionally known for.

Also, Streamliners moved the pickup and tone switches to the upper bass bout. The 6123 grouped all it's controls on the treble side.

Even though it is generally not put among the classics by Gretsch pursists, the Streamliner has definitely catchy looks (especially the Cherry Red 6103). Playing is very smooth, but the Hilo addict might be baffled by the Supertrons at first - I was, and it took me some time to find the guitar's sweet spot. The animal rocks when slightly distorted or with a discreet overdrive, but can also be gentle and rich given the right volume / tone combination. (Oh, and may I add that Dan Duffy says it's a great instrument ?)

This was my first Gretsch. I got mine new in '72 although I think it was a '71 leftover, it didn't have the gear drive truss rod. I sold it in '75 and used the money to buy a Gibson ES 340 which I perceived at the time as being closer to my goals which was a real, by-gum, jazz guitar. (It wasn't.) I'd love to see Gretsch reissue this, perhaps as a lower end Korean made replica of an interesting piece of Gretsch history.

The 6103 Streamliner was even more clearly descended from the 6123 Monkees model than it's 6102 twin, thanks to it's Cherry Red finish.
