M&M's Jazz Talk

  1. Here's a spot to discuss tunes, techniques and more with Michiel and friends!

  2. M,

Here's the main riff for Milestones and the chord sheet for Midnight Blue. Two more using that super cool m7-m7-Maj7 progression.

Which, I had a look at Summertime's progression and the addition of the Maj7 in that is super cool.

Here's youtube of the two tunes:

    Milestones:

    Midnight Blue

The melody line of Midnight Blue is based around the pentatonic minor scale at fret one. Should be easy to "ear" out. :)

Let me know how you like!

  3. I added a couple play-alongs for the tunes. My BiaB skills are a little slim, but it'll get you by.

Milestones progressions is really similar to like an "Impressions" or "So What". Gm (Dorian) for 16 bars, Am for 8 and Back to Gm for 8.

  4. Allriiight! 8-) 8-) 8-)

As soon as I have a guitar in my paws, I'm going to have a go at it. I'm travelling in Germany until friday, so that will be in the weekend. But I'll check out the sheets when I'm at the hotel tonight.

  5. good tunes :)

re Milestones - the middle 8 isn't in fact a middle 8 at all, it's 16 bars long on that Am section. The usual scale used for that section is the Aeolian mode (6th mode of the C major scale) - this is the scale that Miles specified for the soloists in the original recording.

  6. NSM!

Thanks for the correction and input.

To add, great to know Miles specified Natural Minor on the B section.

The Bb note in the G Dorian sections vs. the lack of Bb over the Am adds a nice contrasting flavor.

Hey, NSM, what sound bank do you use with your BiaB?

Lastly, it just occured to me that I could make better chord sheets via BiaB. I'll do that later.

  7. yaahhaaaaarrrrgrrr.... utube germany blocks the vids because of copyrighting issues. W... f'in T..... F! 8-o 8-o 8-o 8-o

Anyways, I know milestones, but I'd love to listen to midnight blue. I remember the title, but I have no melody associated with it in my pea-brain.

Hey Neil! Glad to see you here as well. Can't wait to hear your take on it.:) :)

In case you missed it, here's my current (somewhat rusty) take on Sandu. I've been having a lot of fun with that song lately after our jazz challenge last year. You'll love the ending. ;-) ;-)

And here's a(nother) vid I did on summertime.

    http://youtu.be/FJYboL-DauU

both were recorded with the amp I completed last weekend. (hence the rust ;)).

  8. We'll have to do more tunes!

Man, talk about rust! I almost entirely stopped playing for a spell. ...and posting.

Just a down swing I guess. Feeling the old pull again though. :D

  9. Yeah, I missed your presence here the past months. Glad you're back M :)

  10. Here's a nice link - in fact, for educational purposes re Milestones, this is as good as it gets - its a transcription of the theme with Miles original three part harmony and his scale choice for the middle section - interesting to notice that the Aeolian Mode is referred to here as the Pure Minor. Following the theme, it continues with a transcription of part of Cannonball Adderley's solo - you'll find it HERE

As far as sounds in BIAB go - my version is Version 12 for Mac - it's years out of date, and I just use the built in midi sounds that came with it - it's more than adequate for most purposes. I've done a couple of tracks recently with a drum part comprising a mix of BIAB and drum loops - check 'em out HERE and HERE.

Michiel - the first of these two tunes was played on my G5122 that you played - I found a really excellent guitar tech here in Edinburgh, a new guy to me - he did an amazing set-up on it, it's gone from feeling tight and clunky and too high in the action, to a tone-monster that plays like butter, it feels even better than the Anniversary and the TV Jones classics have really come into there own - they were set too low apparently, he brought them a lot closer to the strings.

Nice to see both of you guys around again btw :)

  11. btw - the transcription of Milestones I linked to in the previous post is transposed for Eb saxophone, in case you're wondering why it's in that key :)

  12. Ha! So are we going to record something then??:D

  13. Did the chord sheet get attached for Midnight Blue? It doesn't show for me. Doing the tempo justice on Milestones is beyond me, but I'd give Midnight Blue a try. I was thinking just yesterday that I should put in more time with some Kenny Burrell tunes.

  14. jqrm...I was just thinkin' the same thing...8-)

  15. Guys, try right clicking it and choose show picture.

It was acting funny for me too.

I still plan on posting a much better chord chart later. Let me know if anyone needs help with the melody.

NSM, I don't suppose you have a midi file for the notation? Or know of BiaB or other software will turn that chart into a midi file.

I'd love to let the computer transpose it. I'd say I'd like to do it, but I know I'll never get around to it! ..maybe I'll just cop a few licks...

  16. transpose it

    iRealb is your friend! :D

  17. megabutter - there is software that will let you scan music into your computer, and other software that will then open the file and let you transpose it then export a midi file, but it's expensive.....several hundred dollars in fact.....sorry 'bout that! For the record, the software is Photoscore for the scanning and Sibelius for the transposition and midi export......if you're feeling particularly flush, you can find out about them HERE BIAB won't do that job unfortunately.

  18. Little less "cluttered":

Hmmmm...that Bb in bar 6 of the "A" might sound better as a Bbm7 if you don't play the extended chord from the first sheet.

Also, somehow I missed NSM's two tunes. Lovely, skillfull melodic phrasing as always. Permission to download?

  19. M, you listen to Midnight Blue yet?? Btw, the whole album's a must. :)

  20. Cool! Just did. Sounds like that song is right up my alley.:) I'll work on Midnight Blue first.8-)

NSM: those two songs sounded great. Fantastic playing again, thanks!:) The 5122 didn't feel 'clunky' to begin with to me.:) Compared to that wunnerfull Anniversary maybe. Glad to hear you found someone who could iron that out for you! Now you have 2 great instruments. :P

  21. I made a BiaB arrangement of Michiels Summertime. There are a few different versions out there, so the solo section is a mash up of those. Enjoy!

    https://docs.google.com/ope...

...told you I was going to hijack it!!

  22. Hey M, cool that you gave it a shot! I'm honored 8-)

I'm impressed by how close you nailed it! And I like the chord variations in the solo section. I'm going to chew on those for a bit.:D

One question tho: what is the B-pi?-7 chord in there?

    In the head I play

    Am7 - Bm11 - Cmaj7 - Bm11

    Am7 - Bm11 - Cmaj7 - Dbmin#5 (or: A with a C# base note)

    Dm7 - Em7 - Fmaj7 - Fmaj7

    Bm7b5 - Bm7b5 - E7 - E7

    Am7 - Bm11 - Cmaj7 - Bm11

    Am7 - Am7 - D7 - D7

    Cmaj7 - Am7 - Bm7b5 - E7

    Am7 - Bm11 - Am7 - E7#9

Fair is fair though: the chords and voicings came from my guitar teacher at the time. The rest (what rest?;-)) is my doing. I was so frustrated I could -only- do the melody -or- the chords, that I went looking for a way to combine them. And the result became a little bouncier than the original.

  23. Thanks for detailing those out! I'll change that around a bit to fit.

  24. I just realized that when I play the melody as well, I'm swallowing the returns to the Bm11s.
