Been away for what feels like an absolute age doing sound gigs mostly (aren't in-ear monitors such FUN to mix?!?) and playing quite a few too.

Haven't returned empty-handed, though. Boxed up a quick version of 'Bound To Fall', a song that me an' Mrs Shuie really enjoy singing round the house. So we recorded it and put an audio-only version on you tube.

There's a bit of Magna'tron action, on the old lefty Cochran-clone, for those interested in Gretschy credentials.

Mrs Shuie, aka Misspopanoche has catalogued loads of Stills/Crosby/Springfield/Byrds etc on her you tube 'channel', however that works. Check it out if you enjoy CSNY. Saves on a bit of searching misery, so I'm told.

Beautiful Job! TRiad has always been one of my favorites. David Crosby has a great voice, but that cover was the perfect blend between David and Grace Slick's cover.

Shuie, I almost never comment on audio postings here. (I think they're all good in different ways) Truth is, I never feel like I have anything insightful or relevant to say except "liked it".

This one is the exception. I was always a big fan of Manassas and of this song specifically. You guys nailed it. My highest compliment is that I listened to it all the way through. The instrumentation and the harmonies were superb.

'Bound to Fall' is just one of the great forgotten songs. I especially enjoy the way the time signature keeps changing. David Crosby's songs appeal for the same reason. Misspop (Mrs Shuie) is really pleased that the version has been pretty well received, so thanks Richard, Jesse, Tommy, Bern, Mark and Jethead for your comments. She bust her ankle in a BIG way last year and is still on crutches with more ops to come. Recording some music is a big help for her. Thanks again.

The first Manassas album is, for me, the very peak of Stills' considerable achievements. It just seemed to unravel for him after this album. Can't ignore Chris Hillman either. He was probably the driving force behind this song's inclusion on the album. He'd tried it with the Byrds a few years earlier and never seemed to lose faith in it. Here's the Byrds backing track (no vocals have surfaced on this version). Mike Clarke never really manages to conquer the time shifts but it still sounds pretty cool-

And 'Triad' is another curio that we really enjoy. I was drinking a bottle of wine when we recorded it and it was getting the better of me by the time I dubbed the electric! MrsS sings it rather nicely, even if I say so myself.

I got tickets to see Stills when he comes to the UK in the autumn. He's probably going to be really ropey but i'm not really bothered. The older I get, the more I enjoy his songs. Just glad he's still around and wants to do it. If any of you fellows are going to his Newcastle gig let's catch up.

Thanks. As it turns out, I've had one version or another of "We'll See" around the house since the late '80's, when I picked up a "Stampede" bootleg. Stephen and Neil were songwriting geysers in full eruption during that time.

It was completely crazy that "We'll See,", "Down to the Wire," "No Sun Today," and "Neighbor Don't You Worry" didn't see the light of day in their time -- all of those songs were stronger than many on the first BS album, I think.

The Springfield had an odd in-between period, as outlined in the box set liner notes -- they recorded enough songs for a followup to their first LP, then left most of them behind in favor of the fruits of the recording sessions that yielded the bulk of "Buffalo Springfield Again." The so-called "Stampede" songs are the missing evolutionary links between the first BS album and "Again" (and there really was quite a leap from BS to "Again").

I really ate up the bass sound you got on your version. Just perfect!

That song should never have been shelved. If there's one album I wish could be remixed, it's the first Springfield LP. No bottom end and thin, piercing guitars. If only Jim Messina was at the controls for that record. 'Again' has the bestest production of all the albums, methinks.

Glad you liked the bass tone, Paul. It's an old righty Mustang. I flipped the strings round and fitted a mute. Play it with a soft pick, turn the tone up and it's instant Carol Kaye!

I think 'Bound to Lose' is another of the tragically overlooked numbers. The vocal segment is so bittersweet in contrast with the uplifting latin coda. Had a go with it, hope it works for someone.

hi Shuie, I liked the covers that you and your wife did. good stuff. I've liked the Buffalo Springfield and Stephen Stills for a very long time. FWIW was the first song that I learned to play on the guitar back when the song first came out. as a matter of fact, Stephen Stills is from my home state of Louisiana. again, good job on you and your wife's music.brent

Keep the Stills stuff coming! You guys nail it. I am a huge Stills fan and all of the offspring from BS there after. Great Harmonies that are solid even today.

I have always been a sucker for harmonies because my voice was not made for solo's where as your Mrs. nails a solo so well there is no need for harmony if you know what I mean. The interplay of her voice and your guitar styling create a true harmony.

I am hoping some day to sift through this digital world of recording and at least post a small musical sample for entertainment purposes...in the meantime Shuie please keep them coming!!

Nicely done. Have you got a version of "Bluebird"? Steve Stills is one of the classiest guitarists I've ever seen---saw him get an ovation for hitting a vocal high note. Mickey Hart of the Dead says Stills was the first musician he met that knew the studio equipment as well as his instrument.

Cielski, by all accounts Stills was an absolute monster in the studio. He could play every instrument, and often did. I'm pretty sure that the original 'Questions' (on 'Last Time Around') was Steve, exclusively. He had a LOT of studio ability and could make a record on his own if he had to.

Paul, Diesel Park West is a great group. They had a bit of success in the eighties with their west coast sound. The singer is also left handed and often plays acoustic. They were known in Leicester as the Left Hand Band. I used to play with a Leicester band called 'Box Clever'. The bass player played a lefty Rickenbacker. We were known locally as the Other Left Hand Band!!! Rick Wilson is a cool guy and has a fair few lefty Gretsches. I've known him a long time. He was blind drunk once and offerred to swap me a 60's Fender Jaguar for my Cochran copy. I declined.
