Hello, all ...

Looking to expand my solo repertoire. Thinking Chet/Merle/Reed/Emmanuel/Yandell/Knowles styles.

What are your top handful of essential, “must know” tunes for this genre?

All suggestions welcomed and appreciated ...

3

Windy and Warm, capo third fret.

In no particular order:

  • Freight Train
  • Nine Pound Hammer
  • Mr. Sandman
  • Windy & Warm
  • Cannonball Rag
  • Trambone
  • Blue Moon (TE's arr.)
  • The Claw
  • Wabash Cannonball (Doyle Dyke's arr.)
  • Poor People Of Paris
5

All great suggestions. I would also add "Whispering" and "I'll see you in my dreams". I struggle mightily with them all.

6
  • Avalon
  • Fly Me To The Moon
  • Twilight Time...

Couple of Merle suggestions: as mentioned, I'll See You In My Dreams, Goodbye My Bluebell and Love Letters In The Sand.

For Chet material, I often put together medleys of 3 songs or more, utilizing the thumpicking portions, leaving out the jazz bridges. This tactic is very useful for Christmas tunes, for a lot of which I use my own versions. In general for Chet's songs, there are an endless number of tunes to play around with to make medleys.

Deep River Blues, Wrap All Your Troubles In Dreams, Caravan
