"JC" - Nice collection! "senojnad" - thanks for sharing too. Yikes! I should have snatched that old 6120 for $250(back in the early 70's no one wanted one) but I did score a '54 Tele for $350 the same day! Even back then there was something cool about the 6120 - it was the Eddie Cochran/Eddy thing for me. "JC" & "afire" - Are the reissues (Super Gretsch)you both mentioned identified as a model "7690"?

JC, afire - (1)Do either of you know how long were the newer 7690 models were reissued for? (2) Any ideas how much these go for used? (afire mentioned that he has seen a few) Buying from a UK seller with the current dollar vs Pound/Euro is too expensive for my wallet. The example on Ebay UK (thanks again...) is different from an original. The controls are mounted on the body verses the pickguard like the originals but I could easily live with that!

Aug 29, 2008 1:24 p.m. JC:
They where made from 1998-2002
Yes ,the controls where on the body of the reissues,i don't know why they did that.
Price wise, i'm as in the dark as yourself, the UK prices are always to high though. Just keep an eye on Ebay as they do come up from time to time.

No idea on prices either. They're a nice looking deluxe guitar, so I wouldn't expect anybody to be giving one away, but they're not exactly sought after.

Thanks guys (JC & afire) & to the rest of you for helping me! Now...if I could only win that lottery jackpot..! Questions folks: (1)Are those Filter'Tron p.u.'s on the Super Chet? (2)Is the reissue of the model 7690 officially called a "Super Gretsch"? (I can't find anything on the net when using this name). Help!

Yes islandgretsch, those pickups are indeed Filtertrons, but they have Hi-Lo-tron covers! A cost cutting measure on the part of Baldwin .
Super Gretsch was the offical name for the reissues. Better to just Google Super Chet ,you'll know the reissues as they will have the controls on the body and won't have Chet's name on them
Of course there is also the Deluxe Chet which has the same body shape but has thumb nail inlays and body mounted controls . But it has four knobs on the lower bout where the reissues of the Super Chet has three.
They never reissued the Deluxe Chet. It is alot more rare too, as they where only made from 1972-73. Deluxe Chet models 7680 = dark red,7681 = dark brown.
The original Super Chet was made from 1972-80

JC - I'm confused. Isn't the model 7680 called a "Super Axe" as opposed to a "Deluxe Chet"?

islandergretsch, welcome to the wonderful world of Gretsch guitars!
Yes the numbers are the same, but the Deluxe Chet came first 72-73,it was out of production when they started using the number again for the Super Axe,which came out in 1977.

The Deluxe Chet just looked the same as the Super Chet, but had Neo Classic inlays and the knobs mounted on the body, and a plain headstock.

Does anyone know the width of the neck at the nut and scale length of the Super Gretsch? Did these guitars suffer from the same poor quality electronics as other Gretschs from the late 90s (and early aughts)?
Thanks.

Sep 25, 2008 1:58 p.m. JC:
I don't know what the neck width is sorry.
The scale length for the original Super Chet however was 24 1/2-inch, then around the late 70's it went to 25 1/2-inch.
The reissue Super Gretsch is 25.5

JC;
Thanks. I thought I'd read somewhere that the Super Chet and Super Gretsch were both 1 3/4", but I could be mistaken. I have a '59 Nashville Classic and I really like the wider fretboard. I've wanted to get a Super Chet ever since I saw a video of Tom Petty with one, but the ones I've seen are ungodly expensive and many seem to have binding rot issues. I'm thinking I could get a Super Gretsch for a more reasonable price. We'll see.
Thanks again.

I have owned 2 Super Chets in the past. One was new and one was one of the first models. They were both Great guitars but the old one was the one I played most of the time.It had a thicker body and Killer tone. The only thing I didn't like was the controls on the pickguard because the tiny screws would work themselves out and the little knob would fall off !!I installed wire arm Bigsbys on both of them.I traded the newer one to my cousin many years ago for a Country Club..Guess I should get hold of him and see if he still has it.

No problem caliban335,i hope you get one of them soon!
Sassy, I sold my 78 Super Chet to my uncle,i might just do the same as you and find out if he still has it ,and more importantly,if he still wants it!
