I have never tried it and I might be wrong here but I don't think normal pick ups work with nylon strings.

You might get a bit of sound on the lower three strings, but the three top strings will not be picked up by the - erhh, pickups.
To use magnetic pickups you need metal in the strings.
You might want to get one of those nylon string strats that Yngwie Malmsteen has been know to use

thx for the replies chaps, i should have mentioned its only for acoustic use.
essentially the guitar teacher at my daughters school wants her to use a nylon string guitar as he is teaching spanish type stuff this term but she flatly refuses to use any other guitar - she must have taste - so putting nylons on the 6120 seems like a compromise

Bad idea, I think. Not only will it be very difficult to actually hear, there is less tension on a nylon string set than a steel string set and using them may cause neck movement. I have seen quite a few classical guitars damaged by folks stringing them with steel strings...

tried just the top string, main stumbling block is the nut i think, the slots are too narrow for the thicker nylons.
Looks like its a no go as i don't want to widen the slots and risk any damage.

Such a thing is not entirely without precedence. D'Angelico once converted one of his archtops to acoustic for a cutomer.

It would take a lot of setting up to get it to work right. Nut slots, saddle slots, and the the fact that the neck is designed to have tension on it (the nylons won't give you much) would make this a real hassle.

how about getting a cheap classical from Rondo? sometimes they even have solid-top ones - they'd be good enough for a student.
music stores these days also have some entry-level solid tops with very pleasant sound.

After all the setup issues, you can try different kinds of piezo pickups that would pick up the sound if you ever wanted to amplify it. I don't know how loud it would be otherwise, though.
Also, the neck radii are much flatter on classical guitars. I'm not familiar with that style but it might be harder to do certain things with a more "round" fretboard and whatever difference there is in the space between the strings.

I doubt that is's worth the effort. It sounds like the teacher is a purist that expects a classical guitar. The fretboards are much wider, and almost totally flat. The strings are far thicker, especially the trebles. Classical guitars are probably easier to learn on s the tension's less, the string spacing is wider, and the nylon is easier on tender fingers.

Depends how old she is, but if she's under 10/11, then It's worth just getting a nylon string guitar and let her get used to steel strings on your 6120 - i've taught young kids who have turned up with steel strung guitars despite telling their parents nylon strings will be easier on their fingers. Then the poor kids always complain that their fingers are hurting - and then quit. I can't do anything about it

thx chaps, i don't think its worth the effort from what everyone has said, i shall just try and coax her into the classical i think, i have a couple of cheapo's knocking about, she just likes the 6120
, i'm not even allowed to play it now as its "hers"
, if neither her or the tutor will budge then it will have to be a new teacher
