Identify this Gretsch

  1. Hi folks I have been asked to research the value of a friend's Gretsch. He says he bought it in 65, but the SN doesn't add up.

I can post pictures once I figure out how, but for now, here's a description.

Double cutaway, two pickup with Bigsby tailpiece. Transparant pick guard. Truss rod access (I think) is on the back under a black plastic plate on the heel. SN 103257 Gretcsh on the head stock and tailpiece. I don't see any markings or stamped stuff inside when looking through the F holes. A lot like a 335. My friend has cancer that cannot be cured. He knew Lenny Breau and George Moody.

So....I'm looking for help/advice. cheers Folks Roly

  2. Sounds like a Nashville. The serial number is date-coded and translates to Oct. of 1973, which is consistent with the burns gearbox (truss rod adjustment) feature. Need a photo to be sure on the model.

  4. Roly, in case you don't have one or can not post a photo of the guitar, you could try looking through the old catalogs to see if the model is shown there. (let us know if you have any success)

    1972 Gretsch Catalog

1972 Gretsch Chet Atkins Guitar Catalog

    1975 Gretsch Catalog

  5. Hi folks Looks like a Nashville but there's no etching on the pick guard. Did Gretsch make "plain Jain" models?

  6. next one

  7. one more

  8. Thanks for your help.

  9. Your pal must be from Canada, two of our great guitar players.

  10. GreTschocaster

Yup, we are up in Whitehorse. Always cool to run into someone who knows of George.

  11. I' ve been to Whitehorse a couple of times, unfortunately both times were in the dead of winter. Would like to see it in the Summer. Still a really nice place particularly if you like the outdoors.

  12. I came up here 22 years ago to do a one month bass gig. Winters arn't much fun. The summers are like nowhere else. There's a lot of support for the arts up here. I don't think I could make a living anywhere else without doing road work.

  13. Current offer is 2100 from a local collector. Figure that's fair? cheers

  14. bump Just looking for opinions about the offer. Mervin has been given his last rites, it would be cool to wrap this up before he crosses the bridge.

    thanks Roly

  15. I m no expert, but has it happens i've been doing a little research past day or two on Baldwin era Nashvilles or Gents.. seems to be in line with the low range for dealer prices, but perhaps a little pricey for a private sale. If youre interested in the guitar and want to help your friend ease his affairs at his stage, then karmically speaking thats a good price. Strictly has a hard nosed business transaction, you could find one for less.

I played a 73 Nashville the other day at a shop, was actually mightily impressed - ceramic filters are kind of cool.
