So the stock market sucks, and the vintage Gretsch market is soft at the moment... so when this '54 Duo Jet feel into my lap, it didn't take much for me to convince myself that it was time! She's not a Scripty (I wish!) but as a second batch example, she's close enough for me at this point. I'm loving the chunky neck, and the sound of the chambered body. Now you'll all understand my recent post about seeking a plain-topped control knob! The missing switch tip and Melita parts are already resolved.

Thanks for the technical support dmanlow! This is the only photo I have at the moment... not great I know. She has a Nitron top, and the Melita is floating. It's very clean, but not perfect. Some buckle rash on the back, and the tuners look suspicously minty. I'm diggin' it!

Nice Eddie! Very clean and the rear pickup facing back, I've seen them facing forward as well. Anybody know when the Nitron tops were used? Was it just early on?

Thanks guys! Hey JBJ, I saw that flipped pickup too. I've seen it before on guitars, and just assumed it was an oversight when remounting the pickups. This guitar has white/black/white Dyna spacers, which I assume are not original (since other models from this era used the tortoise cellulous material... which typically breaks-down). Perhaps when they were installed the pickup got flipped. Are there any sonic implications to that?

Congrtulations Ed, on a great find and a great buy! It is beautiful, and looks VERY clean for a 53-year old. Those of us here at GDP who are of that vintage (or beyond) should look so good!!!

BTW - The pickups on both of my '50s guitars are mounted that way and I seen them like that on lots of others. I've also seen them both facing forward.

Thanks guys! It's cool to have a solidbody again. Back in the early 90's I picked up a '58 Jet Firebird, that I suspect had some pro headstock repair. I never knew for sure, but the E string would go a little sour on certain frets. And in certain light you could just make out a small dowel (or something). Anyway, I had only paid $900 for it, and everything else was straight so I rationalized it. I really didn't play it much and I sold that guitar in 1999, and have been a loyal disciple of the electric archtop (Streamliners!) since. Until now...

Great score! No phase implications of the flipped pickup or anything, it just puts the pole pieces in a slightly different position. Up to you if you can hear that. I love the big ol' chunky necks too. My '56 is the best thing ever. Jets are just IT!! Were that a scripty, I'd be really, really jealous! Does 2nd batch have a block inlay at the first fret? Welcome back to the Jet club!

I've done a bunch of research on these (among other models ) and have determined that it appears that the #130xx batch was a large 150 unit group of Duo Jets, and they were the second batch produced... the first of course being the Scripty's (also 150 unit batch). Unlike the Scripty batch these second batch 6128's do have the block inlay in the first fret.
