It's true. You can go blind from ugliness.

Well...I know those look like shredder pups, but here's a thing for you.
Tom W Doyle is a monster Chetpicker, and a long-time member of CAAS.
Check him out on this page, a good bit down the page. His own guitar, which he's playing (soundclip included), has pickups of his own design, and is a sunburst...
This modded Gent may look ooogly to us, but I suspect every mod was made with clear and respectful intention to improve it as a fingerpicker's tool. Nother words, those pickups may look blasphemous to us, but they may be things of beauty to hear.
I also find reference to a Tom Doyle who is a friend of Les Paul, and takes him to the Iridium for his Monday night gigs. Seen in the light of Lester's (and Chester's) emphasis on gadgets and function way ahead of aesthetics, this just looks like a Gent that's been tinkered with to improve it.
(During CAAS I embedded links to Doyle's personal website, and his guitar company's site – I find now that those links go nowhere. Dunno what that means.)

The proof would be in the playing. Looks like blasphemy, but it could be a great player???!!
I'd have the tuners to restore my CG to original.

It'll be interesting to see what it ends up selling for.

I know these mods was common practice in the 70's...I bet a used '66 Gent was worth about what...$800 back then? Probably wasn't a big deal back then...

Probably more like $200-$300! I remember seeing a Double Anniversary? for $100 in the late '70s.

Oh, perhaps he was. I see that he is Les's engineer at The Iridium, in New York.

I am sure that what Proteus states is true, but I would not want a guitar that sounds like Tom's own guitar. Listen carefully to the tone of the guitar when he breaks into the fingerstyle picking. Any G6122 or G6120 would have that sound beaten hands down!

It's butt-ugly. But I suppose you could argue any of the functional mods, even the refin may look good to someone (with glycoma)... but the relocation of that headstock plaque is driving me nuts! That's just change for change sake... and it makes no sense, and looks really dorky !

I think it sounds great, Ric12string. I see what you're saying, but his guitar is a different beast and probably sounds exactly as he wants it to sound (he's also on TV, with some soundguy undoubtedly tweaking his tone in some way somewhere down the line. It's probably hard to guess how your solo-fingerstyle tone is going to relate to TV studio micorophones. I've never played on TV, but it's probably also not the most natural environment to play in.)On an aesthetic note, is the art-deco style headstock on that guitar not just beautiful? I also notice that the neck pickup appears to be sunken down into it's cavity.

I agree that I do like the appearance of Tom's headstock. It is different and worthy on its own right.
But, I would have to hear the guitar in person to know whether I liked its sound. From the only recording that I have seen of it, it doesn't sound good.
And I fully agree with KCeddieB that there was no good reason to move the nameplate on this guitar. If you don't like having a nameplate, then just remove it, but to move it down was silly. It simply looks stupid there!
