Hi all; Newbie here!!

I have a chance to buy a '63 6120 for what I think is a very reasonable price. Trouble is, I had a good play of it; compared to just about every other Gretsch I've played, it seems very warm - dare I say, dull??

Is this a common trait of this model? I haven't had the opportunity to play many early '60s Nashvilles, so I'm a bit in the dark with this one. The Guy also had another Gretsch (Streamliner) for sale, & I actually thought it played better than this one (except I'm not really a fan of the Supertrons). Any advice appreciated

What kind of strings are on it? How close are the pickup pole pieces to the strings? These things can make a big difference.

The 63 would be a better investment but are you buying this to make money or enjoy a good guitar you may never sell? It is difficult to turn down a vintage just because that era to some of us is just "cool" but maybe think about the main reason you want this guitar?

Thinking about "Dead" and what I have encountered over the years... the strings could be old, the nut could be pinching or corroded, the bridge base may be no longer flush with the body of the guitar, the tone switch or pot could be busted, did you closely look over the guitar?

If it's the pickups that are lackluster, you could always change to TV's. Filtertrons of this era can be hit or miss. How does it sound and play acoustically? That will tell you alot of the sonic possibilities of any electric guitar.
