60's vs 70's Gretschs

  hey y'all. i've really been wonderin' about this question for a while now: how much better/worse are the 60's vs 70's Gretsch's (hollowbodies)?

  it seems to me that the build quality of the 70's Gretschs are pretty darn good (ie, i don't see binding rot on any of them; they don't seem to have neck issues; they have the same pups, etc).

  i've noticed that they don't have any headstock plates, they got the strange japanese tuners, and their body shapes on the upper bout look a bit funny...

  but for the money they sure do seem to come darn close to the 60's Gretsch, and may even be better in many respects.

  i've never owned or really played a 70's Gretsch hollowbody, so i'm wondering if the pups sound different, if the neck it bigger or slimmer, if the nut width is bigger or smaller, etc. and what other differences are there?

  I can only speak about my experiences with 6120's / 7660's. I found the '73 7660 I had to be of superior build to the earlier shaped ’71. V.s. my ’67 6120 the 7660 was similar build quality.

  The ’73 neck was smaller in size width and depth vs. my ’67 and didn’t suit me. The ’73 Filters sounded sublime – higher output than the 60’s filters I’d played…more raunchy.

  In short, I have played maybe 3 early mid 70’s classic model Gretches and liked them…my ’67 offers a better package all up in terms of playability and sounds but I really did like the others and in my view they are worth a good look when buying. There’s a good video on Sarah McLaughlin (?) live back a few years of the guitarist and his 70’s 7660 (I think…or a Country Gent) ….it looks and sounds fantastic.
