The Lonesome Spurs...
This unique duo describes itself as "honky tonk garage;" someone else calls them "The White Stripes of country."
If those terms are supposed to mean something about stripping music down to the essentials of songcraft and execution, so that small details stand out in high relief – something like a green hill rising from the Texas plain – then I'll buy it.
If they're supposed to mean something about conviction, commitment, bravery, and faith in honest presentation, I'm onboard again.
But if they're supposed to mean the musicians lack skill, craft, or accomplishment, then don't you believe it. Lynda Kay plays straight, steady no-nonsense rhythm on a reliced aluminum tenor Trussart Steelcaster, kicks a Samsonite suitcase with the steadiest, strongest foot you're likely ever to hear attached to a pretty, petite brunette, and sings with a voice suggesting (but never mimicing) some of the great female voices of country's great bygone eras.
Through, over, and around Lynda's triple contribution, roots guitar master Danny B Harvey weaves complex Travisian fingerpicking, slashing rockabilly licks, rich jazz voicings, straight-up rock and hard country riffs, and some Spanish flavoring besides.
It may sound like it's back to the basics, but it takes way more than the basics to pull it off. This is unadorned music-making, without the help of thundering bass or chooglin' drums to push it along - and Lynda and Danny make it work.
And do they look great, or WHUT?
You'd have a hard time finding two nicer, more unassuming folks in the music biz too. It was a pleasure meeting them, and a pleasure hearing them.
