Oh boy, the fun is about to begin now! Proteus, your inimitable style of reportage will make the wait well worth it. I've never been to Austin, but I have always heard what a rockin' town it is with the heavy concentration of college students there.

What's not to like about this trip? ... Music, great guitars, great cars, libations, hot Texas women ... I could go on and on.

Speaking of women, what is the status of the "Gretsch girl?" Did that ever work out with Ami? Will she be attending this show as an (un)official representative of all good things Gretsch?

Edit: Is there a better way to report on this event rather than the "one very long thread" method that was used at NAMM? The number of pages became unwieldy at some point. What is your take, Proteus, on having multiple threads? It would make sense if Baxter were to create a separate section for just this event, which could then later be melded into the Miscellaneous Rumbles section, or wherever else it might fit. But, it seems like shorter and more threads might be a worthwhile experiment for this show. Whaddya think?

Boyko, I felt the same way about seeing them until I found out that they are opening up for Brooks and Dunn at the Molson Amphitheatre. I wish that they would have come to Toronto last year with the Stray Cats and the Pretenders. Seeing those three bands at Massey Hall or another smaller sized venue would have been nice.

OK, morning in Austin, lots coming and I've taken the Ausin pledge to keep it weird.

(What's weird is finding such a cool town in Texas, if you take my meaning!)

Indeed I'll split into separate threads as seems to make sense, particularly keeping giveaways and contests to a separate thead. (I suspect much of the traffic to the Big NAMM Thread came from contestular participants.)

As it turned out, ZZ didn't happen for Joe and me (insufficient all-access passes). Instead, after Mexican at Guereros (live 60s-70s covers band on the patio), we went to one of Austin's legendary clubs, The Continental (one of SRV's breakout venues), and saw the Lone Spurs and Unknown Hinson.

Coverage of that coming in another thread. Suffice to say there's nothing it suffices to say about Unknown. I. Had. No. Idea!

Dear Proteus,

I do believe, when it comes to Texans, ALL towns in Texas are cool. Have you been to San Antonio, or Fredricksburg, or Van Horn in the winter at midnight and it's zero degrees and the only motel opens it's doors and makes you welcome after driving through a blinding Texas blizzard? Texas is way cool.

Getcha some chicken fried steak. After Unknown Hinson I would say some serious gravy is called for. Have a big time.

IMO Shiner is better than Lone Star, but... you can't play the word game under the bottle cap. Lookin' forward to your coverage!

Really looking forward to your reportage, which is always a pleasure to read. It's usually the little cameos and off-stage observations that I enjoy the most. Proper writing enables the disant reader to be there, too. Clemens had it. So do you.

Thank you all for your patience. It's a gorgeous day in Austin, at a venue that's cooler than anyone could have imagined.

Lots of pics and announcements coming within half an hour or so. Doors open at 6 (it's 4 here now), music soon after. Posts will come as fast and furious as I can make it happen.

Soundcheck is happening right now, just outside my headquarters. The kick drum is literally shaking the roof of the too-cool stone hacienda building where I'm camped out.
