Nice work Chris!
Sorry ... I'm surfing the net as I'm listening to this playlist ...
Hey 57! for the past 30 minutes I've been listening to Proteus jammin' on some Electros: hear
I've got a 5129 coming from Joel, and I'm pretending I'll sound as good as P-man when it gets here.
Thanks for the links BK ...
Kudos Pro-man...
Later ...
I've been listening to Jimmy Wilsey's album "El Dorado" quite a lot lately (right now, in fact)....
My niece's band just released their first album, 'The Human Haiku', and she sent me a copy. I'm so proud of her.
The band is called Every Good Boy and they're based in New York.
The album is made even more poignant for me because I made her an acoustic guitar for her 21st birthday and she used it all over the album.
Shuggie101- I just took a listen to Every Good Boy. Great sound, great songs. I'll try to pick up the album. I hate My Space because I can never get through the cool stuff, comments and "friends". Can you write anything about the band? Really nice sound.
I got the new Rocket Science album last week. The album is mediocre, but I can't turn off the four track bonus disc. They re-recorded four of their best tracks live in some british studio.
Have a listen to the original versions of Being Followed, Run Like a Gun, and Burn In Hell I think this is probably the band I rip off the most.
Thanks gretschiam.
It was a bit of a shameless plug I know. I'm in Wales but my niece Orly Ben David grew up in LA then ended up in NY after a spell in Chicago. I'll always remember plugging my Gretsch Tennessean into my Champ via a fuzzbox and handing it to her when she was 7 or 8. Most kids would get bored pretty quickly but she'd sit there for hours playing it.
So I guess the seeds were sown and, without any further help from me, she developed into a very fine fingerstyle acoustic player. She has also developed into an expressive singer and lyricist, writing all the songs on the album.
It took quite some time to put the band together but I think the current line up with bass, drums, electric and acoustic guitars plus cello violin and glockenspiel provides a distinctive and and effective context for the songs.
But then again, any proud uncle probably would say that.
Hey Shuggie,
Great songs and good band, I like it. And I totally understand the uncle/ influence/inspiration bit.
It is so great to have someone (in this case my girlfriends 13 year old daughter) wanting to play guitar and then fiddling around on your guitar and coming up with great stuff. Or coming to you and asking how to play some riff. It is nice that my mediocre playing at least is good enough for someone.
I've been listening to The Who, The Ramones and Jimmy Smith with Kenny Burrell alot for the past 2 or 3 weeks.
I just can't get enough Who.
Hi Tsar,
I'm with you on the Who there. I seem to like them more and more. The first few albums. Substitute actually is one of my all time favorite songs and I always loved I'm a boy.
But yes the Ramones, god I never get enough of them.
Recently I've been listening to the Raconteurs and Jon Spencer a lot. Also I suddenly felt a need to hear the Replacements again but Ween is my all time favorite band. I always fall back on Pure Guava, God Ween Satan and the Pod.
The stereo in my truck is set up to play my iPod, and my listening fare 90%+ of the time is Chet, and lots of him. If it isn't Chet, then it's usually some sort of rockabilly: Setzer, Lee Rocker, the Rev or my latest Rockabilly disc "Archer St Blues" by the Starkweather Boys.
Yesterday, I was listening to Setzer when I picked up my daughter from school- we were listening to "One more Night" and she got a big laugh out of the line "I just need my big ol' Gretsch, and one more night with you..."
Nice one Dan.
It's fun being a bad/good influence on the youngsters. If only I could interest my son in playing guitar. Then again he'll probably rebel and become a doctor or lawyer instead
Yes, You better watch out with that. Don't want him to have a good career.
My eight year old has pretty well got it figured out- We got her a cheap acoustic for Christmas, with the agreement between my wife and I that if she took to it, we'd upgrade her and get her some lessons. It took a few months for her to peak the interest, but last week I bought her a decent knockoff strat, and her first lesson is Friday.
She's already saying "I want to earn a Gretsch." SO, give me a few months, and I'll probably be looking for a lefty for her.
Nothing, I think I'm having listeners block. Since the invention of the iPod I find my self looking at 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 and not one that I want to hear at that moment. Most of the time I listen to the songs in my head.... is that the same as voices?
Nic, good choice on Kenny Burrell - perfect rainy day music.
I've been going through a Byrne/Fripp/Eno/Verlaine/Frisell phase lately. Not coincidentally, I've also taken an interest in fingerpainting and magic-eye puzzles.
Actually I'm listening to Jerry Reed music right now. I just finished listening to an instrumental he did on the "When You're Hot You're Hot" album called "Turned On" that is awesome. I'm going to try to learn it today. Man that boy could pick. He had such a unique style. You know it's Jerry by the second note... SON!
EDIT: I went to YouTube looking to see if I could find Jerry playing that tune and although I couldn't, I did find our very own JAY SMITH doing a knocked out version of it. Please enjoy... JAY SMITH: "TURNED ON"
Most of the day i just have on the local radio station, although at the moment i'm listening to BBC Tees listen again feature!
One of our local dj's has just started a new job over there(afternoon show)
She's kept me sane over the last four years here ,so i'm still listening to her!
But when i'm playing my own collection its usually a mixed bunch,Beatles, Stray Cats,Danny Gatton , Chet, Martin Taylor, Django, RevOrganDrum, The Kooks, Fratellis, Zutons, Duffy ,AC/DC ,BR549 ,ELO ,Jamiroquai, KT Tunstall ect,ect......
I like everthing!
Except crap,i mean rap
lately i've been listening to the last Radiohead record, "Ace of Spades" and "Bomber" by Motorhead, and a self-compiled CD-R with the My Bloody Valentine "You Made Me Realise"/"Feed Me With Your Kiss" EPs.
there are certain discs which are never far from the car player: "Music Has The Right To Children" and "Campfire Headphase" by Boards of Canada; a compilation CD-R of the Slowdive EPs; "Hatful of Hollow" by the Smiths; "You" by Gong; "Loveless" by MBV (which is literally stuck in the player in the truck); the electric disc of "4 Way Street" by CSNY. every so often i break out a live Grateful Dead (typically from 1973) or Phish (usually 1997) show or some other oddity from my live collection. the last thing i was heavily into, having discovered them in the last couple of years, was Belle and Sebastian. funny that i'm hella old but hardly ever listen to anything from before 1980 any more.
Ohh yeah DK, some good new music out right now - Radiohead's In Rainbows, Beck's Modern Guilt and even Coldplay's Viva La Vida (again the Brian Eno connection) are all in constant rotation.
Though I do have to balance this fancy-music with some Townes Van Zandt every few days.
I just went through a phase of listening to a lot of Cal Tjader. This guy had the Afro Cuban Jazz thing down to a fine art.
57 Chet,
Man I love that Dan Hicks record, "Last Train From Hicksville'. You can load my iPod anytime.
