Miscellaneous Rumbles

Thoughts on Viva Las Vegas?

1

I've never been to Vegas before, and it has never appealed to me, but the chance to see Duane, the Stray Cats, and the Killer at a hot rod show the day before my birthday might make it worth the trip. What's the event like? Suggestions for where to stay? Sights to see? Any plans for GDP folks to meet in person? We might make the 10-12 hour drive down from Wyoming or try to get a cheap flight, not sure yet.

Not a big Vegas person, but am not going to miss that show.

I lived there for about 15 years. You will probably have a tough time finding a room. You can try to get an early flight to see the show, and then leave that same night on a red eye flight home.

Airbnb. A whole new can of worms.

Having been to a previous Viva Las Vegas, I can tell you it was a blast. Lots of great folks, families with little kids, cool cars, rockin' music. What’s not to like?

I do know The Orleans Hotel is booked solid. Other than that, Las Vegas is a big place. Come on, this is going to be a great show!

My wish is Duane, Jerry and the Stray Cats play at NYC.

7

Thought's? Wish I could be there.

Wouldn’t that be fun!

9

I have no idea about any future Stray Cats plans.

Hotels are hard to come by during that weekend, but look hard enough and you can find something reasonable. You can use Uber to get you around without breaking the bank so distance isnt a big issue anymore.

The 3 day Event Passes usually Sell Out , but the Car Show Tickets are usually available the day of, but buy your tickets early just in case.

Bring comfortable shoes as your on your feet the entire day and finding a place to sit down usually means eating at a restaurant which means waiting in long lines. Did I mention Looong lines. The place is Packed and I mean Packed.

But its FUN.

11

The strip itself is usually packed and would be on such an occasion, downtown might be a better if not a glamorous choice. The Cal, Main Street Station, Plaza etc. usually offer good rates and aren't hipster cool so there might be some vacancies.

I had to attend a business conference in Las Vegas some years ago, and boy, was I glad to get the hell out of there! It bore as close a resemblance to Hell as I can imagine, short of an actual war zone.

Now, a rare and noteworthy concert bill might persuade me to go there again, but only to see the show, and spend whatever remainder of time there in a quiet hotel room, away from the insanity of the casinos and the Strip.

13

Thanks for the tips. I got car show tickets. We found some air bnb options, but might use Grand Junction as a halfway point and ride mountain bikes there and just head into and out of Vegas the day of the concert. Still thinking about that part of it. But at least we're going to the show.

Looking forward to it either way and hoping to meet some of you in person.

14

I've also never been, but I'm looking into going for the line-up as well. A bunch of my friends in other bands are playing, but my band isn't on the bookies radar yet. Hoping that changes in the next few years.

15

Went to Vegas on my 10th anniversary and got married by Elvis.

Fun time if you got something going on, but by my second time, I just wanted to go chill in the desert.

VLV looks like a blast.

Back when Viva was at the Gold Coast,2006.

Wyowill- Great, you're going! You will NOT regret it! I went two years ago, and with this line-up, it will be an awesome show!. If you still need a hotel, check what is listed on the VLV site hotels for VLV. You should be able to get a room somewhere.. I'm sorry I'm going to miss this, this year. I'll be in Vegas the week prior for a trade show (darn it!).

BTW, have you seen Vince's artwork for the event?! Awesome stuff, Vince!

rented my a Toyota Camry for the 5hr trek! My Dodge Magnum is painful after about 2hrs of driving. Seats are made of wood.

20

I went to VLB two years ago. Brian Setzer was the headliner It was a blast.

Got married there, and got my first tattoo!

21

Lots of bands playing. Any suggestions for ones not to be missed?

Recognizing that my tastes aren't the same as everyone else's, and it's not going to make me popular with the missus, but come Saturday morning, I'm going to stagger down to the Car Show at the crack of noon and park myself there in the bleachers for Mitch Polzak (who I believe will be playing with my buddy Hank Maninger), followed by Hot Rod Lincoln (Buzz Campbell!), followed by Duane, followed by Jerry Lee, followed by the Stray Cats. And by then it'll be 8 pm and I'll probably be sunburned and starving, but likely a better person for the experience.

24

That’s a solid plan Frank.

Save me a spot. Better make it three!

25

Well I was in Vegas last week for Work stuff. Is this going on this week? Seems like that's how things always go for me.
