Song suggestions - instrumentals

  1. Have been in the mood to play some instrumentals lately. This week I've been working on Apache and Rebel Rouser. So, looking for similar songs, in terms of complexity and style.

    Suggestions?

  2. Classical Gas

  3. Walk don't run, Dance on, Wipe out

  4. Shazam-Duane Eddy

    Pipeline-The Chantays

    The Savage-The Shadows

Ghost Riders in the Sky-The Ramrods

    Run Chicken Run-Link Wray

And ALL of The Ventures in Space

  5. There are a lot of good ones from the Ventures first half-dozen albums.Hits like "Perfidia" and "Ram-Bunk-Shush",album cuts like "Lonely Heart" and "Sunny River","El Cumbanchero",the list goes on and on.Want a workout? Try "Hawaii Five-O" and the Dick Dale version of "Misirlou".

  6. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division really should be a guitar instrumental.

  7. In the 80's my grafitti band and I did a mashup set comprised of Apache, Walk Don't Run, and the Dick Dale/SRV version of Pipeline.

The kids danced their heads off. We usually followed up with Sleepwalk.

Now, if you're interested in a little more challenging set- mash up Fly Me to the Moon with Mr Sandman and Blue Skies. A little reverb, set the mud switch to the middle and you`re channeling the Master.

  8. Man Of Mystery- Shadows

  9. American Sunset - Link Wray Nasty - Link Wray

  10. What jukka said.

    Plus Torquay by The Fireballs.

  11. Great suggestions - keep em coming.

Steering clear of the "workouts" for now. Trying to keep up with Dick Dale reminds me if my efforts to do same with Rev Horton Heat. Fun to do, but I get too sloppy. Focusing in more manageable stuff to start, then will build up.

    Thanks!

  12. Not exacta in the same realm but a great instrumental... 2nd Avenue Shuffle, Popa Chubby

  13. Riptide - The Chevells

    Fast Freight - Ritchie Valens

Just a couple that came to mind.

    Dylan

  14. If you can find it, there's a "Killer B Side" by the Pretenders called "In The Sticks."

EDIT: Well, looks like it wasn't that hard to find after all.

  15. Oh yeah, and if you're a Los Straitjackets fan, and you do the tablature thing, check this out...

  16. Third Stone from the Sun

  17. Penetration. Originally by the Pyramids but look for the "Surfaris" version on Youtube.

    EDIT:

    Here is the link: Penetration

  18. Red River Rock - Johnny and the Hurricanes / Ventures. Underneath the Bunker or White Tornado - REM.

  19. You've just gotta give this one a go. Essential Brit eccentricity from Nero & The Gladiators — Roman costumes optional.

Guitar player on this is actually ace session man Joe Moretti. Other guitar players in the band at one time or another included Mick Jones, later of Spooky Tooth and Foreigner, and Colin Green, who played with Georgie Fame, Alan Price and was later md for Shirley Bassey.

Edit. jqrm: ah yes, Red River Rock. When I was about 16, every time you went to a fairground they always had Red River Rock (and Del Shannon's Runaway) blasting out. Happy days.

  20. What jukka said.

    Plus Torquay by The Fireballs.

    – Dave_K

My heroes! Check out their first album."Torquay" is there,so are "Bulldog","Kissin' " and "Nearly Sunrise". "Cry Baby" and "Blind Date" are vocals, but lead guitarist George Tomsco does some gorgeous accompaniment to pre (and post) Jimmy Gilmer lead singer Chuck Tharp.

  21. Telstar, here is best guitar version (in my opinion) http://youtu.be/Kj5Yeuw9QVw

  22. Oh yeah, and if you're a Los Straitjackets fan, and you do the tablature thing, check this out...

    – evil thing

Love Los Straitjackets, though it's hard enough for me to keep up without wearing the mask...

  23. "My heroes!"

DaveH: Back in my schooldays (I'm talking around '60 to '62 — a long time ago) The Fireballs were the cult instrumental band to follow. Footpatter, Bulldog, Torquay and the rest were essential listening. I had the 'Vaquero' album. Wore it out.

George Tomsco played the Cavern, Liverpool, about three or four years ago. I didn't see him, but a couple of my nephews did — their band was on the same bill. They really enjoyed his stuff.

  24. @ DaveK-George,Stan and the guys were big in Canada where I lived once upon a time, and a lot of my contemporaries had their ears stuck deep in the old Capehart/RCA Victor/Zenith hi-fi working out all those licks.About 10-12 years ago, when I got online,I found out the band was still working out of Raton NM,which is not too far down the road from me,so I've gotten to see and talk with them several times.A real personable group of guys, and I have all their autographs except Danny Trammell's on one of my Telecasters. My younger self would be ALL we-are-not-worthy if he could have seen it.Maybe I can rent Doc Brown's DeLorean sometime...8-)

  25. I run my students through the following set of "Classic Guitar Instro". It is intended to be a progressive curriculum, in that each tune introduces new techniques &/or concepts. And they get harder as well.

    1) "Rebel Rouser" - Duane Eddy

    2) "Rumble" - Link Wray

    3) "Ghost Riders in the Sky" - Ramrods

    4) "Wipe Out" - Surfaris

    5) "Walk, Don't Run" - Ventures

    6) "Guitar Boogie Shuffle" - Virtues

    7) "Apache" - Jorgen Ingmann

    8) "Pipeline" - Chantays

    9) "Wheels" - String-a-Longs

    10) "Sleepwalk" - Santo & Johnny
