Probably said better before (two Tims come to mind) but I'll add my own cynical $.02:
There is a substantial feast of issues on the political table this voting season: the economy, health-care, energy independence, the war, education expenses, global trade, the environment, etc. There are complex foreign policy positions in play regarding Iran, Israel, China, Korea, Palestinian reclamation...
And on and on and on and on.
Collectively, all of it is heady stuff and all of it will have an immediate and long-term impact on our lives and on the lives of our kids.
Frankly, I am not as concerned about the candidates (and their positions) as much as I am concerned about the voters.
I am experiencing WAY too many voters who are either too impulsive, too lazy or too stupid to put forth even a modest effort to sufficiently gain an understanding that allows them to render a vote based upon issue knowledge instead of upon soundbites, quips, gender, race or party. Our candidates (and their handlers) know the electorates' hot-buttons and are experts at firing up the party bases by using the same-ol' tired emotional fuel-cells: god, guns, gays, pro life, pro choice, Al Gore jokes and now, faux indignation.
I believe that both candidates have sound positions on all of the above. Yet, they are lured into the lowest common voter effort of understanding to state their cases.
It's easy! Hang a morality badge on the emotionally driven issues, sharpen your wit, and stand near the applause sign. And SMILE!
But for goodness sake, don't challenge the voters in a way that will cause them to seek an understanding.
They just don't have the time or it's too hard or worse yet - they don't care.
Sorry for the buzz-kill.

The Anne Kilkenny email, which ought to be required reading, includes statistics and documentation hard to fake, and I hope is the template for investigations of the reality behind florid campaign "narratives."

That photograph is obscene.
I read the Kilkenny email and must say, I take it with a grain of salt, although I must also say that it certainly does not sound in any way far-fetched.
The Damon denouncement was good though - he seemed genuinely flummoxed by the very idea of President Palin. And, you have to admit - when he invoked the image of Palin 'staring down Vladimir Putin' he made quite a sharp point. It would be ludicrous. Then again, at least it would yield excellent opportunities for the world's sub-editors. You could have 'Putin V Palin' or when the US and Russia are enjoying good relations - 'Two Ps in a pod' and so on.

We need more salt than we can consume to swallow the American political process.
The compelling things about the Kilkenny email are that a) she speaks only of things she personally knows, and expresses considered but limited opinions based on them; b) she offers numbers and timelines, easily enough verified; c) she does not try to answer speculative questions or offer opinion for which she has no background.
The facts can and should be checked, and everyone can draw hisher own conclusion.

Well after watching Palin's interview with Charlie Gibson and her comments about her willingness to engage Russia militarily I believe we are seriously FUBAR. Is she really this stupid? Holy cow, anyway I recommend the following:

The photograph of the near-decapitated deer. It's barbaric.
Yeah Proteus - that's exactly why I take it with a pinch of salt: she admits in the article that she believes that Palin hates her - it's not too unreasonable to assume that the feeling might well be mutual and her publication of the article may well be motivated by such a feeling. I'm not saying it is but I'm just maintaining a healthy skepticism. For what it's worth my gut feeling tells me not to trust Palin one iota.

I'd take a Vice President who forgets that one person is in a wheel chair over one who seems quite willing to put another 10,000 into wheelchairs if it furthers her interpretation of God's will.
For years I have heard Republicans criticize Hillary Clinton as being under-qualified, agressive when questioned, and overly strident. It's strange that, now that they have their own version of Hillary who shares the same traits, these 'defects' that so offended them are the very same things they claim to admire about the one they call "Sarah Barracuda".

But Timthom62, who are we fighting in the war on terror? That would be ISLAMOFASCISTS. The enemy has a very big relgious motivation to kill us who he sees as the infidel. Perhaps this war is a holy war and I hate to say it but that's the sad reality. Somebody needs to ask the Obamessiah about the Chriatin zealot content on his written note he left at the parying wall a few weeks ago when he was on his overseas trip. If experience is the issue, I'll take someone who is a governor who made tough decisions, went against her party to defeat pork, sold the not needed state lear jet as oppossed to some who was part of a corrupt Chicago city machine, became a senator only to mostly vote present, someone who is good pals with Bill Ayers, unapologetic terrorist bomber of the pentagon and police stations and also chums with the black lib preacher Rev. Wright. But don't look at the facts and real qualifications of any candidate. Let's vote for the one that the rest of the world wants to lead our nation down a european style socialist toliet and the MTV/MySpace American Idol crowd wants!

Guys, Do you think The Obamessiah if elected will let you keep more of your paycheck? Do you think he leans toward venture capitalism? Well, if you count that fleecing he did with Tony Rezko and how he got his nice Chicago suburb mansion. Do any of you know about his wonderful Global Poverty Act he's trying to pass? If it quacks like a duck and swims like a duck then perhaps it is a duck. And cyclopsam, too bad no one in the MSM has the balls to ask Obamesssiah the same questions in the same gotcha manner as Charlie Gibson did to Palin last night. There's more scrutiny on Palin and her background and family since she was named the VP nominee than Obamessiah has had in 18 months since he threw his hat in the ring. Did anybody see Obamessiah squirm nervously when he was interviewed by O'Reily? He's not used to the tough questions or critique and that's why he had to cry enough about the lipstick on a pig comment. I guess if and when he's elected he'll cry enough to Putin or Chavez when he doesn't have his handy teleprompter in front of him. Sorry if anyone in a european socialist state got offended by my remarks. Now how about some yummy moose burgers? Sarah has some ready to fry up with a fresh kill! I like mine medium rare.

Bryherb, we need a tax increase. We've got to get out form under the roughly half TRILLION dollar debt ol' spendalot Bush has incurred.
Riddle me this; if Democrats are "tax and spend", and Republicans are "decrease government spending", why is it that when Clinton left office, there was a budget surplus and in the 7 years since 9/11, good ol' Dubya has brought us nearly 1/2 trillion into debt? Yet Chevron and the rest of big oil are posting record profits? I guess his little pittance of a stimulus package wasn't the right thing after all.
I'm not content to pass on the debt this administration has built up to my child. Maybe you are, and that's pathetic.

Sep 12, 2008 2:32 p.m. Bryherb:
bonedaddy, Bush, the president doesn't spend tax $$$$. It's the congress or the senate, Bush can use his veto pen and yeah he should've been all this time. There's enough blame on both parties for wasteful and pork spending. Big oil has made lots of profit but their profit margin has gone down or stayed the same. You want to gripe about industries making too much $$$$ and price gouging? The cosmetic industry and google have a larger profit margin than big oil. We don't have a tax problem, we have a spending problem. Higher taxes lead to higher gov't spending. see here: http://www.house.gov/jec/studies/2007/Taxes%20and%20Deficits%20-%20Vedder.pdf
