New movie about Chess Records. Anyone interested in this? I don't think there's any Gretsch content, but still looks interesting.

Looks interesting, but it'll probably have a little too much Hollywood in it. Nonetheless, I'll most likely see it, the film-whore that I am...

Saw it last night. Liked it. I don't know if it was "too Hollywood" but I enjoyed it. I didn't see any reference to Bo Diddley and if they did some how I missed that. They had one guy playing guitar for Howling Wolf but not sure that guy might have been Bo 'cuz the guitar looked like his early guitar not the Gretsch rectangle job.
Why was it called Cadillac Records, thought it should be called Chess. Can't be a legality can it, they used Leonard Chess real name and the recording artist name so why not call the record company Chess Records in the movie?
I'm not and never was enthralled by Beyonce but I can say Etta James never looked so good.

Maybe this has to do with it being "too Hollywood" or maybe it's just bad research but the guitars were not period correct and the amps. They had a Blackfaced Fender DR or TR in the studio while this took place during the '50s. They had Muddy Waters with a Tele with rosewood board in a recording session in 1952. Rosewood was much later I would say. They had a guy with an ES-335 in the studio for sessions from the early '50s. Wrong. Can't do that without pulling a Back to the Future. Also the ES-175 had humbuckers and such.
Okay that didn't bother me much. I understand most the audience won't be the wiser, that's fine, at least they got Chuck Berry's Gibson ES-350 with P90s right. Now that was a treasure to be seen that guitar.
What got me is they got the time line wrong or the chronological order of some of it wrong. They showed Chuck Berry being upset that the Beach Boys using the music from "Sweet 16" for "Surfin' Safari" then he gets thrown in the big house for violating the Mann Act. He violated that act in 1959 and released from the big house in 1963. Not sure when he got sent to jail but it was before "Surfin' Safari" and the Beach Boys were around but in the movie they showed him complaining about the Beach Boys before he was arrested. That my friend is chronologically wrong.
They showed the Stones visiting Chess to do some recording. They recorded there I think in 1964 but I think they were still in the '50s period in the movie, you know going back and forth. So that was wrong and I think another thing wrong.
But other than that it was pretty entertaining to say the least.
Now what about the Hank Garland movie called "Crazy" where is it? DVD yet? I can't find it.

Let me rephrase. The record company in the movie was called Chess Records but why for the movie title was it not called Chess but Cadillac? Only thing I can think of was he, that being Mr. Chess, had hooked these artist in golden handcuffs by feeding them Caddy's as their entrance and introduction to the company. Other than that why call it Cadillac Records.
No, I didn't spoil the movie for you by mentioning the Caddy's, just watch and enjoy, you know the story anyway.

"Cadillac Records" was the nickname used by employees because of Leonard Chess' habit of giving Cadillacs to his successful artists. I saw the film and enjoyed it a lot --- and Howlin' Wolf's guitar player wasn't Bo Diddley, but correctly named as Hubert Sumlin, a blues guitar pioneer and master.
Anyone interested in the roots of rock and roll or blues will probably find this movie of interest, even if we may quibble with some of the inevitable Hollywood liberties. Still, an important story, well told, with great respect for the music and some fine performances.

Parabar thanks for clearing up the Cadillac Records name of the movie. Thought that might be but still it's Chess Records.
Yes I thought the player for Howlin' Wolf was not Bo Diddley because they named him and it didn't sound like Bo or McDaniel. But I thought maybe I was wrong and that was him. Man that Howlin' Wolf guy was creepy, wonder if he was depicted right.
They showed the whole "payola" thing too but no reference to that name was in it and no mention of Alan Freed being busted. But that's okay.
Yeah was a good movie wasn't it.

Oops Bo's real name was Ellas Otha Bates from what I read in Wikipedia, not McDaniels. Always thought it was Ellas McDaniels. Oh well.

you think Wolf was scary? Junior Wells once stabbed his bass player in the ass. while they were onstage.
they probably showed Muddy with the Tele because that was his instrument of choice in later years, cf. the "Muddy Waters Telecaster" model. the photos i've seen of Muddy from back then show him with a goldtop Les Paul with P90s and the original weirdball bridge/tailpiece thingy.

Echosonic Bo Diddley was born Ellas Otha Bates but was raised/adopted by his aunt 'Gussie' McDaniel- Therefore all his music is by Ellas McDaniel-

There needs to be a film about Gretsch guitars. From the start to nowadays. That will never happen but wish for a documentary on Gretsch.
