I wasn't around for The Soapbox, but, from what I've heard about it, I think I'm glad that I wasn't.
A few months ago, under a rather divisive title regarding the vertebrate characteristics of the female Clintons, a substantial political discussion took place here at the GDP. I found much of it incredibly informative, and evidence and opinions were presented that did alter my opinions on several subjects. However, between the ad hominem attacks, "gotcha!" argumentation and repeated posts from non-participants telling people they should stop the discussion, it fizzled out. I've seen nothing like it here since.
I actually met Sarah Palin briefly twenty years ago, I have a family member who worked with her and has been a resident of Wasilla, Alaska for almost as long as Sarah, but I have absolutely no interest in discussing the reproductive habits of her daughter or Mrs. Palin's relative hotness, (seriously, does anyone think that as VP, she's going to cast the deciding vote in a tough Senate debate and then whip off her clothes and start dancing around like an outtake from Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher" video?). That seems to have been the theme for the two most recent 'political' discussions and I've been avoiding them like the plague.
I'm all for having a respectful political discussion here, but really have no interest in seeing either Party's talking points repeated ad nauseum or see things descend into name-calling. Fortunately, the thread titles are usually enough to deter the uninterested.
I have noticed in the last few months, however, even in many non-political threads, an erosion of the sense of mutual respect and decorum that, to me, made the GDP unique. It seems to me that we have enough "Dividing Issues" as it is and I really don't see something as charged as politics improving that situation.
