2012 London Olympics

  1. Anybody going or interested or even competing?

  2. Water polo rules

  3. ...or even competing? 8-o

  4. I've never been a sports guy---especially organized sports. It costs too much to go to most games---$7 warm beer doesn't appeal to me, either. The Olympics are orphan sports that are only popular to the masses for two weeks once every four years. I have tons of respect to those athletes that compete in them---they're not in sports for the money. They do it because they enjoy it.
Pro sports seem to be nothing more than a money making machine---millionaire athletes arguing over money with billionaire owners, with lawyers getting their cuts as well. There is an added sales tax around Indy to pay for the new stadium.(What doesLucas racing oil have to do with football?) Or Staples with basketball? At least the largest concert venue in the area is no longer sponsored by Verizon but by Klipsch---at least Klipsch is in a related business.

As always, it's all about the money.

Water polo's fine---but it's tough on the horses.

EDIT---Just in---Penn State hit with $60 million in fines and 14 years of wins erased. Another reason to avoid mainstream sports. Best of luck to the Olympic athletes.

  5. I have a great chair routine. I'd like to demonstrate my snooze ability in the recline position. ;-)

  6. They've done wonders with goggles for the horses

  7. I have a grand daughter that will compete someday. :) I like the Olympics. Summer Olympics especially. I always watch it. It will be interesting to see if Usain Bolt continues his dominance. He was unreal the first time I saw him. He has been beaten a couple of times, but I think they caught him off guard or something.

I don't think I would want to fight the crowds in person, but watching it on TV is neat.

  8. I suppose I could riff a list of things that I care as little about as the Olympics. Lemme see, uhh... Low-carb diets. Michael Moore. The Republican National Convention. Kabbalah and all Kabbalah-related products. Hi-def TV, the Bush daughters, wireless hot spots, 'The O.C.', the U.N., recycling, getting Punk'd, Danny Gans, the Latin Grammys, the real Grammys. Jeff, that Wiggle who sleeps too darn much! The Yankees payroll, all the red states, all the blue states, every hybrid car, every talk show host! Everything on the planet, everything in the solar system, everything everything everything everything everything everything - eve - everything that exists - past, present and future, in all discovered and undiscovered dimensions. Oh! And Hugh Jackman.

(inspired by Dr. Cox from 'Scrubs')

  9. Jeff, that Wiggle who sleeps too darn much!

you've crossed the line, buddy !

  10. Spoken like a true American ;-)

  11. I love me some gymnastics!

  12. Maybe it won't rain. I probably won't watch any of it but will be interested to see how the US basketball team fares just because of the hype.

Winter olympics and curling. Yes! :)

  13. Will there be Womens beach volleyball this time? That's some cool stuff.

  14. Beach volleyball on Horseguards Parade. :)

  15. Women's - and men's - beach volleyball will be at Horse Guards Parade, what with London not having a beach.

Football - our national sport - will be all over the country, where excitement is spreading like butter from the fridge. They literally can't give the tickets away.

  16. My wife is there as team management and my adopted daughter is competing in the rowing. So interest in my household will be genuine.

  17. Wow, I'm suddenly interested... :) :) :)

Best of luck, Ray. Do let us know how she gets on.

  18. I will watch much of it.

the Olympics was something I've watched since I was a kid. I can even remember going to a women's gymnastics exhibition at MSG as a kid - back when Olga Korbut was an Olympian. My sister was into gymnastics, but I tagged along - and as an 8 or 9 y-o boy was captivated by all these athletic young women in leotards.

That aside, I find the summer sports fun to watch - track and field, swimming, boxing, basketball and more.

It also brings back memories of watching Wide Workd of Sports, the only place we'd see these sports other than the Olympics when I was a kid.

That's great. Good luck to her!! Please post a reminder when she is due to compete so we can all be pulling for her.

I used to work with a woman who was coxswain of two Natioanl Collegiate championship teams, and whose husband was on the 1994 US Men's Eight team that won the world championship.

  20. Our life has been dominated by the Olympic cycle for the last 15 years, so this two weeks coming up is pretty intense. Keep an eye out for the womens' double sculls over the first week. Hopefully, the final on the first Friday.

  21. We have a cyclist from Boise, Idaho competeing. Time Trialing is her specialty. She suffered a broken collarbone earlier this year during the prologue in her home town of Boise. Kristin Armstrong

  22. My interest dropped when Pro athletes started competing.

I liked it when our amateurs were up against the the other "free world" amateurs and the professionals from "chaos".

Even though it wasn't always a fair fight (juiced Soviet pros), how sweet when we took them down.

Now you get pro NBA, NHL, Tennis, Soccer... players stroking their egos. I'll watch the games that are less "pro", like the rowing, judo, wrestling, swimming and gymnastics...but will skip the synchronized swimming and ribbon twirling.

  23. The mighty dollar has certainly intruded more and more into the Olympics. Check out how many athletes competing in the first week forego the opening ceremony. They would be expected to be at the stadium early evening, and back in the village about 3-4am. All because of TV scheduling :( . Then again, without the revenue, the event just wouldn't happen these days.

  24. Congrats Ray. Hope she wins. Keep us posted.

  25. With the mention of TV, one American network has 2,600 people in London for the event!
