The Modern Sounds

The Modern Sounds played to a huge crowd at the Dubuque Arboretum last evening. Joel, Alex and Bo were in fine form. The variety of music ranged from jazz standards like "Stardust" to a little known Coasters tune, "I'm A Hog For You."
Joel Paterson played his Gibson ES295 through a black face Vibrolux Reverb. What a sweet tone! He also told me his next CD project will be available in a couple of months. He described it as something aimed at "guitar geeks", a tribute to Les Paul. I learned about this trio here on the GDP a couple of years ago. So, for the uninitiated, and those in the know, The Modern Sounds.

Love them - they never come to Georgia it seems though.

Dig! Thanks for the introduction!

Bonedaddy will be along most any moment now, I'm sure...

Actually, in the spirit of 'if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything' I was biting my tongue.

It's tough to keep up with all the things Bonedaddy doesn't like. I didn't know these guys were on his list, too.

I've seen them a couple of times at Deke's guitar geek festival. Completely forgettable, thank God. The drummer is great though.

As is the guitarist and the bass player. And the vocal harmonies are tremendous.
So, we are in total agreement then. I am relieved. I thought that we were going to disagree over the high performance quality of Modern Sounds or something.

No no counsellor, we're in agreement. They are indeed tremendously forgettable.
Diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly - Stop, stop.
Just dreadful.
Of course, I'm not a fan of Geritol either...

Wow. You've been to Geek more than once, so it's safe to assume you like Deke himself. And I know Deke's crazy about these guys. I'm kind of intrigued that you dislike them so much.
What kind of stuff DO you like? (I'm really not trying to be a wise guy, I'm just curious.)

Deke is cool, yep, and Crazy Joe the whole deal. The deal with Modern Sounds for me is that they are boring. No hair on Joel's playing at all. Sure, he's very technically proficient and all, but it's just a bit sterile to me. And the lyrics.
Oh man. What did me in on them was the first time I saw them. They did a song called "Bacon Fat", I think. That whole 'diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly womp womp whoa' refrain was no different than the urban yodeling practiced by pop diva's these days. Overbearing and self serving. Just terrible.
JD McPherson on the other hand, that man has some soul.

This one is almost as annoying

I don't care what you say about the Modern Sounds, that Stomp Stomp song WAS kind of annoying, their other songs o.k., but the link that you just posted got my browser stuck on it and I had to force quit. Are you trying to get banned or what?

Bonedaddy, "Bacon Fat" is a tune by the great André Williams. Check out some of his other tunes, if you want very funny lyrics and a crazy persona.

The Modern Sounds are not for everyone, but they do it for me. There are some artists that simply don't trip my trigger at all. I'd rather talk about the ones that do

I am with you on the Modern Sounds, Bob. One of the things that I was immediately struck by with them was how tight their vocals were. Hard to do live, but they were spot on with their harmonies.
You have to understand Bonedaddy a bit to know why he likes to post about them as he has done in this thread. There is a small part of BD that enjoys being a contrarian. Mind you, he won't be a contrarian merely for the sake of being one; however, if he doesn't like something (e.g., Chet Atkins style fingerpicking), he enjoys being the guy who swims against the popular current. Frankly, I like that he is willing to speak up rather than just going with the flow.
Every musical act (or writer, or entertainer, etc.) doesn't need to float every boat. Find the ones you like and then enjoy them.

Well I know I'm sure looking forward to seeing them in Green Bay at the end of this month, I never miss a chance to see them when they're in the area.

Apologies mind flayer, that was actually just a response to Ric12string. It wasn't even the Modern Sounds. It was Rick Astley and that annoying song "Never Gonna Give You Up".
It's one of the oldest internet memes: being "Rickrolled"

Oh man Walter, that guy is CRAZY. You weren't kidding when you said funny lyrics and crazy persona. He's like a really raunchy Screaming Jay Hawkins
