Ive always liked jack white but i must admit i was surprised when the fame started coming his way. To me he is no better than many other raw bands i like that have almost no fame and this always confused me, is it that he is good at marketing?, got lucky? or something else?
It would seem to me that even if you don't like his music, you must admit he has a good set of ears and that can't be a bad thing for a producer to have.

macphisto said: let me try one more time: "fake" as in "contrived." as in "implausible." as in "a weak lie of an image generated to give someone's painfully derivative work a cachet which it doesn't merit." as in "poseur." as in "trying to be something you're not and failing epically." as in "pretending that your ex-wife is your sister because it sounds good to credulous music journalists."
I equate the suggestion of being "fake" with that of being "contrived" for sure. With the White Stripes, though, I don't see it, nor do I see Jack White as being a contrived act in and of himself. I can accept the argument for some of the supergroups that remain popular today. Rush, Led Zeppelin, U2....and macphisto, this isn't a dig, but your avatar/username is one of Bono's characters? I'm a little surprised at your interpretation of Jack White, when Bono is one of the most "contrived" personalities I've ever seen in the public eye. Opinions differ, of course, I'm not knocking you for liking a band that I dislike.
At the end of the day, in the producer's chair, Jack White has a good ear and has proven that his "style" doesn't interfere with decent production.
As for Ric Ocasek, i definitely wasn't suggesting that he's not capable of production, Weezer's album sounds great. Just that my experience with him as a producer for one of my favourite bands was a little on the lacking side. Minor trivia, Ric Ocasek produced Bad Religion's GRAY RACE in 1996, and Tod Rundgren produced their 1998 album NEW AMERICA, the two weakest (IMO) albums from that band. Maybe they should just stay away from the Cars (and New Cars) connection.

mmm just read all this stuff and must say that you may all be right possibly. Personally I like Jack White and admire his business skills to resell old blues sounds to the young un's.As for Rick Rubin doin nuthin' well all I can say I'm glad he did sumthin'.Like make another generation of new Johnny Cash fans and maybe the reason he really did'nt have to do too much is the fact that Mr Cash knows what he is doing.I for one will always be eternally grateful to Mr Rubin for gettin' those last recordings outta Mr Cash as my world is a much better place for it......

It took me a while to "get" Jack White and the White Stripes. I bought White Blood Cells back in the spring of '02...and couldn't get into it at all then. After that I didn't even bother with the subsequent releases.
I even picked up the first Racontuers album, and couldn't get into it at first. I did get the 2nd Racontuers album, and was blown away. Which made me go back to The White Stripes...I checked out the older stuff (White Stripes and De Stijl) and I dig those a ton, I love Elephant, I'm still on the fence about Get Behind Me Satan, and I love Icky Thump and White Blood Cells (now). I'm also loving The Dead Weather!
I can say for the longest time that I didn't "get" Led Zeppelin either...but as of last spring...they have become on of my favorites!
And the Black Keys are killing me!!! I just can't get enough of these guys! Dan Auerbach also has a great ear and has produced some great albums for some of the underground bands.
I've had Van Lear Rose for two years now and haven't given it a good listen, yet.
as far as people being "fakes"...even when I didn't "get" him, I could tell that Jack White wasn't a fake. Yeah, he's a total eccentric and some of the things he's done have seemed a bit weird...but he's always seemed pretty genuine to me

This is true with any genre of music, sports, etc. Talent does not equate fame. Talent does not guarantee reward directly proportionate to the talent. That's been the way since day one. I'm sure there's lot of people that have worked jobs where they've thought they where better qualified than their boss. There's a thing called charisma. You either have it or you don't. You can take the same joke and give it to 5 different comedians and all 5 will have a different approach. One may tell with impeccable perfection. Another may flub a bit of it, leave something out but with a bit of body language, a vocal inflection, an improv get a bigger laugh. Technically, the guy isn't as good as the "better" comedian but somehow managed to get a bigger laugh. Doesn't matter. The only thing that matter is how the audience reacts.

The answer to all of this is probably - yes.
