Taken, apparently, during the time when Jimi Hendrix was on the Monkees' 1967 tour. Mike Nesmith sitting next to him, and that's probably Nez's guitar Jimi's playing.
... which leads me to wonder if Hendrix ever connected with The Sundowners' lead guitarist, who was a left-handed Gretsch player (played a factory-lefty Country Gent). The Sundowners were also on that '67 Monkees tour, and backed up the Monkees when they played their "solo" songs.

Hmmm, cool! It looks like he's playing an Annie. While Country Clubs are my fave, I will always have a soft spot for Annies. I wonder if he ever plugged it in, or if it was just a case of noodling with a guitar that happened to be on hand.

And so, with further digging I find that Dominic Demieri was the Sundowners' lead guitarist, and he did, indeed, connect with Hendrix during that tour. Interview with Demieri here.

That first picture brings to mind the multitude of young girls who can now say they saw Jimi play back in the day, when, in fact, they really went to see Davey Jones shake maracas.
No justice in the world, I tells ya, no justice.

Love Jimi and love Gretsch guitars but in this pic it looks like Jimi doesn't know what to do with the guitar, which I know is ridiculous.
Cool pic! kinda Jimi does campfire songs.

I read an excerpt from Mitch Mitchell's book about his time with Hendrix, and he talked about the Monkees tour. I like how he described Davy Jones.
"There were some nice things about the tour. We did a couple of days on Greyhound buses and we discovered that Peter Tork could play banjo, Mike Nesmith could play guitar, Micky Dolenz was one hell of a nice guy and Davy Jones was extremely short......"
"The next day before the gig--I think we were playing the Jackie Gleason Memorial Hall in Miami--we were taken out on these boats around the inland waterways. All part of The Monkees touring party. The other thing about that was that Jimi was the only person I've ever seeen wear a fur coat in 90 degree weather."
"The gigs all in all were OK, but by about the third day Davy Jones really started getting on our nerves. Noel, at some point discovered he had an amyl nitrate capsule which he claimed belonged to his grandmother for her heart condition. He broke it under Davy Jones nose, who passed out on the floor. A sight to behold."
Yep, Hendrix & Co. didn't think too highly of Davy Jones. Neither did David Bowie, who purposely adopted the surname of Bowie (his real last name is Jones [although for all I know he's legally changed it to Bowie]), so people wouldn't mistakenly associate him with Davy Jones!
