Clapton and Allman. Not a band exactly. But a historic meeting/union nonetheless...

Rodrigo y Gabriela
Really??? I respect their technique and gave it a try several times in the last few years but to me this is some of the most boring stuff ever. It lacks everything I like in music. I don't hate it. It just does nothing to me.

Listening to the Layla album again recently I was struck by just how much lead Clapton let Allman play. Most songs he takes the spotlight. When Eric finally gets fired up in Have You Ever Loved a Woman it's noticeable that he goes to another level, though. There must have been some very strange things going on in this man's psyche at this time (heroin+Patty denials+Jimi+Jimi dying+denying hero status+the impact of The Band+who knows what else). At least it resulted in some transcendent tracks. I guess it doesn't matter as much who played what as much as the fact we have it at all.

I believe both of them were living at the extreme raw outer edge of their lives and their time. They seemed to recognize each other's deepest layer of angst and possibility in the music that Clapton was attempting to create with Layla. In Duane he obviously found a conduit to a level of creativity he had never achieved before. And vice versa. Two men lost in the darkness, leading each other back to the light. An incredible statement for both of them...

troy6120 was going for the metal. In that spirit I will say James Hetfield and Kirk Hammet.
Here are some others to go with the great ones already mentioned:
Billy Idol and Steve Stevens
Slash and Izzy Stradlin
Lenny Kravitz and Slash (Lenny's song "Always on the Run")
Steve Clark and Pete Willis (early Def Leppard)
Steve Clark and Phil Collen (middle Def Leppard)

I think that Mark Knopfler and Richard Thompson would be magical together!

Just remembered another one. I saw John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana on the "Love Devotion Surrender" tour, and thought McLaughlin's lightning articulation and exotic scales and Santana's lyricism both brought out the best in each other.
