he died just a few days after!!..amazing freddie green..comp king
he never veered from the early days when the guitars volume was up to the players efforts not an amp...that & thick strings, super high action, solid wood guitar...classic

He set the bar very high for rhythm players in big bands.
Nobody did a better job of blending with the bass and drums and making that rhythm section sound like one instrument.

Somebody over at the Jazzguitar Forum just shared this story:
"It was his last recorded music. The night he died, the band played in Vegas and in the intermission he a a few others went to a room to watch TV. While sitting on the couch, he suddely stiffened and slid down on the floor unconcious and died - likely from a heart attack. But the show had to go on and in the second set they placed his guitar on his chair with a rose on it. Many of the band member were weeping while playing. After that, when they played "Lil' Darling" there were silence in the places where Greens appregios had been."
