Powertron Plus - WOW

  1. Just had to share. I debated for months on ordering one to replace my single TV Classic Plus bridge. I wanted more output, more girth, midrange etc. WOW is all I can say. These pickups are definitely like the hotter wound Gibson PAF's, but TONE, TONE TONE. They stay articulated unless you really push the Gain - if you have a gain knob that is.

Before I liked my amp's sound, now it's LOVE. As much as I loved the classic plus, it had a nice midrange, spanky growl, but not enough of that firm "GERNK" midrange honk that's so typical on a Gibson Les Paul or SG. These pickups are so touch sensitive. Turn the gain down, and you get a mild roots rock kind of tone, a hair more volume, and you get tones like "Peace Pipe" by Cry of Love. AC/DC without question, and it also cleans up really well simply using volume. It's just... warmer, punchy, yet articulated.

Definitely not thin sounding. It's nice for a change to have the guitar drive the amp, not the other way around. I'm not digging into the strings so hard now to get the grunt, and I'm using less gain to get a "classic" tone. I'm so very happy with this purchase, and I would recommend this pickup to anyone.

  2. Isn't there a Malcolm Young Gretsch?

  3. Clint, were you being sarcastic? Or serious?

  4. malcom's sig has been discontinued as of recent, I thought??

ps.Powertron plus is still fairly conservative in its impedance vs its output (compared to modern gibson style pkups) and thus has a beautiful clean punch that is all filtertron but the second you push an old fender amp that malcom crunch is there. Too many think this is a big fatass sounding pickup like a Gibson Dumbucker and its not, but it rocks just as hard but with incredible string clarity on the bridge.

  5. Said so well. I wasn't sure what to expect. All the Billy Gibbons fans raved about this pickup. I never like that fat rolled down tone sound. I like big tight but jangly bridge tones - like a tele bridge, but with mucho POW!

You could put this pickup in a telecaster and it would have that same punch. I really, really dig this pickup. I'm so glad I bought it. It's definitely not as treble jangly as the classic plus I had in there a few days ago, but there's a hint of it there, and it's more tamed.

My god I love the bass and mid-range this thing puts out. You're so right wiredturtle, it isn't fatass at all. Someone on Harmony Central said "it's like a tele bridge pickup on steroids". That's exactly what it sounds like - there's no mud at all, yet it's tight, defined, and punchy as hell. When I first played it yesterday, everything just fell into place, like the missing piece of a puzzle. I couldn't put my guitar down. Stellar!

  6. Now, if I could just find an amber G6131 "new jet". Played one once, what a damn nice guitar.

  7. PowerTrons are great pickups. I've had them in my 2007 ProJet since not long after I got the guitar.

Gibson mids but Gretsch articulation. Yup. Great clean, and can drive an amp well.

    I love 'em!

  8. Sorry... Double post!

  9. I just find it more balanced - less high end "BLING" for sure. I wasn't a fan of that with the classic +. Still a very cool pickup but not enough of that tight midrange thing that I love so much.

I'm going to try and convince a friend to put on in his tele - he'll shit his pants when he hears mine.
