Hi all.
First post here. Hope it's welcome.
I've recently ordered a hi-lotron to go in the neck position of my Tele. (Replacing a fidelitron that I found way too powerful and dark) just waiting for it to arrive.
I've been panicking a bit because I've spent more than I normally would and on something I've never heard or tried, and there's so few demos of Hi-Los on YouTube.
Last night I found this video and the playing and sound is just amazing.
If my Hi-lotron sounds half this good I'll be over the moon!
I've never heard of this guy before....
I really hope so! It will be paired with a broadcaster style bridge pickup and a 250k volume pot. I hope they mix well. The fidelitron used to really dominate over the bridge and I was using a 500k pot, which rendered the bridge a tad too ice picky. The sounds were a bit extreme!
I'll be using the gretsch hot rod wiring as a guide (though I'm using a box switch because I find them a bit easier to work with...
I think that clip you posted is pretty processed, as well as being multi-tracked, but that airy, almost acoustic tone is definitely the signature sound of HiLos. They sound great but can fall to pieces if roughly handled.

Haha! I didn't know there was a porn actor named Buddy Hollywood. I just Googled him. I may have to change my name after all of these years. I'm not a porn actor but I was asked once...
I think a HiLotron will sound great in the neck of a Telecaster with a 250K pot but maybe even better with a 500K. It's not an ice picky pickup by any means. I'm building a Telecaster parts guitar and I was considering installing 500K pots. Maybe I'll rethink that.

I think it comes down to the amp and pedals you're using too.
I fell on love with my strat though a Timmy clone, the sound was amazing...then I plugged in the Tele with 500k at the bridge and ouch!

I'm a little confused. You've installed it and it sounds amazing, or you're hoping it will sound amazing?

Wierd - half my post is missing!
I had a link to a great YouTube video.
I'll see if I can edit the post....
(Yes - I've fixed it with the link. Not sure what happened there)
Apologies
Buddy Hollywood (the porn actor?)

All of Gretsch pickups have their own unique voice. The Hilo-trons are low output boomy nice pickups.
House of the rising sun sound. Some Beatles sounds too.
Let us know how you get along with them.
I'll be sure to post a video... there's just not enough Hi-Lo information out there! And definitely not one where it's paired with a Tele bridge...
It's taking forever to arrive! (Germany to UK) My Tele is say waiting....

Here it is, demonstrated by a carefully selected collection of bum notes!
Lots of great sounds you got there! Seems like a winning combination to me.
I'm super chuffed! Really pleased
