Hi Ya'll,

If I could find a search feature I'm sure this has been answered 50 times already. Just got in my new ProJet w/ Bigsby and really love it. I want more of the early Beatles sound and understand that the GFS NY pups are a good move. My questions are:

1) Are GFS Retrotron pups "drop in" replacements or do you have to do some routing surgery?

2) What about Gretsch Filtertons, drop in or carving grief?

3) And last, anyone tried the GFS Memphis Rickenbacker sounding pups? Do they really have that early John Lennon sound?

Thanks in advance for the help. I just can't believe how much I enjoy the feel and playing of this lower priced Gretsch. I have an SG, American Strat, and a Casino and love them all, but having a ball with this ProJet

Hi Aster1,

The NYIIs was a "drop in" in my -04 ProJet. Filters means carving and deepening the cavitys, the neck pup will still sit very low.

For your 3rd question I dont have a clue!

On the Filters, just deeper cuts into the body, no increase in length-width for pups?

I'm presuming you really like the sound of the NYII's. IYHO, do they hit that "Early Beatles" sound as a pup?

Well wait, what songs did you have in mind when you say Early Beatles? depending on what you're thinking of, you might be thinking of the wrong guitar because the Duo jet didn't appear quite as often as people like to think!

I had to make the cavitys both deeper and wider beacause i wanted to have them mounted as "English mount".

Those NYIIs sounded (as far as I remember) good, not overwhelmingly good but not bad in any way. And I´m not that into The Beatles to give you a good answer. Vintage VOX amp?
