Why does Mr. Zoom dislike filters so much? Ive been searching but cant find the thred. Have I missed the boat? Soon as those dammed Dynas in a filter are avail Im gonna find out. Anyone got a little breakdown on the F vs D that might shed some light?

As far as I'm concerned, it's all a matter of preference . . . and application. I like them both, though I'm more of a single coil guy.

OF COURSE it's preference. There is no right or wrong answer here.
FWIW, despite the fact that Filters are HBs, they are wound so weak they might as well be considered SCs as far as I'm concerned. My Filters are easily my lowest output pickups- even lower than my tele's single coils.

jus checked out Macs demo, hugh........ Having both might be the ticket.

I'm sure there are just as many folks who like Filtetrons as there Dynas, and many who like both. Funny thing is, those who prefer Dynas are much more vocal about it here, almost feels like their superior... I like my Filters, but I wouldn't need to do threads singing how good they are, and blah blah.. The best thing is just listen to the actual sound and choose what works for you, I reckon. Just saying...

I just discovered a love for the ceramic magnet Filters. I think they sound awesome and I've been a single coil guy most of my life.

I could be wrong but I think the frequencies thing that gives Filtertrons the sparkle also can make them sound cheap and fizzy under certain circumstances. Some of the best recordings I've ever heard were done with Filtertrons but I can't seem to even come close to replicating those sounds.

I like both. I prefer the dynas and think they are very dynamic pickups. If I kick on some overdrive I know I will be likely to have some feedback issues, but I love the tone. Filtertrons seem more versatile to me, but they can not replicate the tones that come from the dynasonics. My experience is that I need a guitar with both to do different jobs. If I was forced to choose between dynas and filtertrons I would choose the dynas.
Ruger9 says his Filtertrons have lower output than his tele. My experience was similar. However, there is a diference. I should say that at one point when I was adjusting the pole pieces on some Filtertons I noticed low output on two of the strings. Like Ruger9 , lower than my strat and tele. The rest of the strings had far more volume than my tele and strat. By adjusting the pole pieces, those two weak sounding strings bloomed and came into focus. I hadn't experienced anything like that before with a guitar, but seeing and hearing is believing. The FIltertrons came alive and the volume level was higher than my other guitars. - When I run my guitars through a mixer, I have to turn up the levels for my Tele or Strat or turn down the levels for my Gretsch guitars. Tweak those pole pieces Ruger9. See if it helps your problem.

I just had never gotten a good sound out of HB's...
Single Coils just work alot better for me, they sound better to my ears.

There are aspects of both that I love. I'm going Dyna because, at least through my rig, I can get more of what I like about Filters (though not everything) out of T-Armonds than vice-versa. In a perfect world, I'd have both. For now, I'm going with the pups that give me broadest swath of their combined virtues. BUT, I only figured this out by being able to a/b an RHH with Classics and an SSLVO with T-Armonds through my own amp and regular pedals (de Lisle 15P, DynoBrain, DM-3). Through I different rig, perhaps I would have gone the other way.
oh, and I also want approval from the more vocal cool kids on the GDP. What can I say, I'm always looking for validation.

I like apples, but the next lad might prefer oranges.

@otterbean:
No problem, bro. The low output of the Filters is no problem for me, I WANT clarity out of those pickups. I treat my Gretsch differently than my tele or PRS...different tone, different amp settings, different playing style.
