D’angelico EXL-1 is Stupid Deal Of The Day

26

Bryan, I was thinking that too that this is a good platform foor modding, well depending on what sort of bracing it has. I remember the Epi Emperor Regents from the 90s were often used as modded guitars. I saw so many fitted with P90s. I even tried one of the sparkle gold ones that someone putt a P90 in the neck and it sounded nice.

27

Looks like the sale runs to midnight. Would be fun to mod one kinda like Chet's.

– Bryan K.

That's kinda my plan. I ordered a blonde one the other day from the GC site ("in stock and ready to ship") only to be emailed the next day that they're on back order(?) Anyway, I have a couple of the TK Smith Bigsby replica pickups I'm going to drop in. I'll be putting a Bigsby on it, too.

28

The blue ones are the stupid deal of the day again Link I gave in and bought one I couldn't resist the blue one.

29

Google “Scott Chinery blue guitar” and see where the blue craze started. I was lucky enough to be at the blue guitar party.

30

I think GC has the natural finish for $100 less. But I too really like the blue.

31

Rhythmisking did you call the main sales number for GC and ask them if the SF stores had them in stock or did you check with the stores yourself? I ask because when I was on the phone with the main sales line for GC they checked the Pasadena (CA) store for this guitar and they said they had none but I knew from being there shortly before that they had some. I thought maybe they sold them from the few days I was there to that day. But I went anyway and they had the three I tried. The main GC number sales guy must have checked the inventory for the store online but the computer database was wrong. You should check with the store directly if you went thru the main GC line.

I actually called the SF store and asked them to check, which they did. They had none, weren't familiar with the deal and said they didn't stock them, but I could order one. Called the San Mateo store and went through the same drill and got the same info. The manager there said D'Angelico's were fairly new to GC's and all they were stocking in the Bay Area stores was an acoustic and a couple semi-hollows (which he rather aggressively tried to get me to come in and try). He also said none of the Bay Are stores would have any EXL-1's in stock, which I assume he got from checking on the computer. I didn't call the Emeryville store, and I think there are a couple more farther away, but I decided it wasn't in the cards for me.

I called and tried to buy one online Monday. And they said they were sold out of the natural.

33

I hope they sell out soon. They're about to wear me down.

I was there, too. Those guitars were amazing! Here's a pic from the soiree. You can barely see me behind the Strawberry Alarm Clock custom Mosrite (though my Borat moustache is clear clearly visible - ha!).

35

If interested, I would suggest calling Musicians Friend, ordering one, and asking for the price match from GC. They will price match this deal. You'll have to wait until mid December for the guitar, but you can get back an extra 8% ($47.92) if you join their backstage pass club.

36

Goldangit! I could NOT resist the blue one at the Stupid Deal price. Once it arrives I'll have to decide whether I like it better than my Epiphone Emperor Regent. Since they are they same type of guitar (17" hollow body with single floating neck pickup), whichever one I like less will go up for sale.

Greg, I rrecall seeing a video on this on YouTube but I can't find it anymore. Thought it was cool Scotty Moore was there.

Is that Arlen Roth in the front?

Greg your mustache looks very cool amoungst the clean shaven people there. Goes well with blue.

See Mark Knopfler play about 37 minute mark. Not a D'Angelico but a beautiful artistic guitar.

Not sure why but the blue is incredible. In photos no but when you see it in person it is.

Sound is most important when keeping a guitar but in terms of looks the D'Angelico wins over the Epi. Epi's Tree of Life is cool but the D'Angelico ornate headstock is really a class act. Then the color ...

Here is our very own Geoff playing a blonde one unplugged. His nice playing brings out the best in the guitar's tone and sound -

And I have to believe the Kent Armstrong minibucker in the D'Angelico will be better than the Epi too. We'll see --- my Emperor Regent used to belong to a prominent SF jazz guitarist and is set up to perfection. Looks is no contest --- it will come down to tone and feel.

And the color in this photo .... rrrrowrrr!!!

Hey rhythmisking --- if you still want to try one out, I'll let you know when mine arrives. You're welcome to take it for a test drive.

I believe Geoff is playing a different model than the EXL-1. The fret position markers and pickguard both look different.

It's plugged in. Watch him turn it up a 6 seconds in.

43

Got mine yesterday. Fit and finish is very, very good. Neck is comfortable for my hands. Downside is that it really needs a setup and maybe, lighter gauge strings. High action makes it pretty much unplayable for me. I expected a straight neck and perhaps minor tweaking, but mine has a bow from the nut to the 4th or 5th fret and then seems to straighten out from there. I hope a truss rod adjustment can remedy this.

I played an older Emperor once and the action was superb. That's more of what I was expecting. We'll see if a setup helps. If not, it's going back, despite its beautiful looks.

44

Parabar, yeah that is a good picture but in person the differences are astronomical.

beat what strings do you think you will put on? Brand and model as well as gauge.

Do you plan on playing plugged in or use as an acoustic?

I think a setup will fix those issues you may have now.

46

Rats! Missed it.

I do have an '79 Ibanez GB10 on the way that I practically stole, so I'm not too distressed...

– Rhythmisking

I have a 79 GB10 blonde I have since 1980 when I bought it new. It depend on what your style is. It is a very unique guitar. As soon as you take off the factory 50awg flatwounds the guitar loses its magic imo. I tried everything ekse stringwhise and I always ended up putting the factory 50 or so awg (I think... it's huge!). The GB10 is designed for that barbwire and that is how I will always use it. It loses its snarl and bark of the spruce top once you have sissy strings on it. It is one of the best made guitars I ever owned, but you have to be specific in your playing. The GB10 is very specialised and unique,

I also have two D'Angelico EXL-1's. Comparing EXL-1 with a GB10 is truly apples and oranges. Completely different animals. The EXL-1 is much louder, way longer scale length, none of the nasalness of the GB10 and acoustically great sounding compared to the GB10. The GB10 has overly thick top and sides compared to other archtopse to control feedback but still be a full blown jazz box body. I love them both, but it is impossible to compare the two imo.

47

retnev, what strings do you have on the EXL-1's and what color are your guitars?

I'll probably try 11s - not sure on brand and model. Mine will be used for primarily recording, and I plan on using the pickup. But it does sound pretty good acoustically, so I might also try miking it. Hope you're right on the setup.

49

beat, do you think it was bowed because of differences in temperature and humidity over its travels from point A to B?

I bought my first Gretsch in 2001 over eBay. Forgot where it was sold from. Was a 6120TM I believe the actual model. Was flamed that is why I think it was designated a TM. It came really out of whack. The neck was bowed and intonation way off. A pro setup fixed that.

50

Fear not. Mine arrived today with the neck as straight as an arrow, with only the slightest bit of relief - just the way I like it. Of course, the nuts slots are too high (they always are). A little time with my nut files and this baby will be singing. You're going to love it!
