Yes! Got a DM3

  1. Tavo, there are two ACA-120G's currently on eBay. But just to clarify, I seem to recall that the 120G is different from the original ACA-120 made during the era of CE-2, DM-2 etc. Please correct me if I'm wrong about the 120G.

Also, Guyatone makes a 12V adapter. Guyatone 12-volt Adapter

I think Analogman also sells a 12V adapter?

"The 9V version of the ACA adapter has a G appended at the end of its name. "

here's a great example of a bucket brigade chip or analog pedal that is meant to run on 12v, then run on 9v.. this video requires a good sound system as it wasnt recorded too well but the dude shows clearly the loss of slapback clarity when he goes from the required 12v to standard 9v.

  3. I'm going to buy stock in Ray-o-Vac for a while. :) I suppose any knowledgable amp/electronics tech could do the mod...I'll look into that. Don't trust myself under the hood of this pedal. I wonder how many of these E-bay pedals have been run under the wrong power for years already.

  4. there's always a 9v batt clip adaptor :) btw.. Brado, that is the question for the ages.

  5. Tavo, thanks for the video link. The difference is definitely noticeable. And he's demo'ing an Arion SAD-1, like mine! I thought about moving it up to 12v. Now I definitely will. Thanks.

  6. Alex that is a funky cool delay, twas my first analog delay pedal ever.

  7. Tavo,

That demo you posted above is how my DM3/DM2 exactly sounds - weak, anemic, buried. Even if I daisy chain it with other pedals.

Now I'm gonna hunt for a 12V adaptor. What's your best bet?

BTW, did you embrace the tone and beauty of the Danelectro DE1 already? !#$@%

  8. Man I am bummin' the DM 3 I bought was a bust . I sent it back to the cat who said he would replace the switch. Now he says he is unable to fix it and will refund my $$$. I have been having some bad dealings lately on "ebaysgonnarapeyou" :(

  9. JB, I've had that and the reelecho and spring king.. they all messed with my nice clean bypassed tone and clipped when I slammed them with my drive toys.

I'm gonna say just do the little mod and live happy with your super cool Boss analog pedals. why mess with finding an outdated unregulated boss 12v power supply? I mean you could get the voodoolabs its got a great 12v supply but thats not cheap! a bit of solder and jumper wire is a few pennies :)

btw.. in several DM-2's and 3's I've modded, I still had to replace either a few electrolytics that'd dried up or a JRC4558 chip that'd sustained some damage from wrong power. If you do have to replace the JRC4558, its best to put a socket in there and try out the hi fi and quieter OPA2134PA by Burr Brown. Unless of course you want to stay OEM.. it'd probably be even cooler if you could drop the older RC4558 in there.....

if youre gonna do the surgery, these are life savers for working on boss boards.

    hemistat

and desolder braid (solder sucker shouldnt be used, it doesnt draw heat away like copper desoldering braid)

  10. Tavo,

I don't have the luxury and guts to operate a pedal, and worse I don't have a steady hand to begin with!

Which gives me an idea. I'll hunt a 2 x 12v adaptor, plug my DM2 for slapback ( I dunno, the DM2 is the king of slapback for me) and the DM3 for longer delays.

Macho Man Savage - "Oh Yeaaahhh!!!"

  11. JB - No old Boss ACA-120 adapters currently available on eBay :-( There are some 120G models, but they are not the same as the 120.

But, Analogman has a 12-volt adapter you can buy new right now. Here is the link: 12-volt Boss Style Power Supply

On the order form it will say 9-volt. But use the drop down menu to order the 12-volt unit.

I am not promoting, nor I have used one of these, so purchase at your own risk. But I'm going to order one just to see how it works with my SAD-1 and CE-3

  12. bah desolder braid....

fixed my dm3 without it! you musn't be quick enough tavo! :P

im all for the mod aswell, saves spending more cash on a power supply. for added mojo i used a nos allen bradley carbon comp resistor leads for the new jumper wire 8-) haha

  13. Just thought I'd drop back by here and say that I'm very pleased with the DM3. I definately get a better signal oughta this thing compared to the Reel Echo.

  14. hot dog!!

  15. Here's something to ponder. If its true that putting the DM-3 in a daisy chain bypasses the voltage resistor...wouldn't hooking up 12v to it while it's in a daisy chain over-power it?

  16. how could you hook up a 12v to it while its in a daisy chain, it only has one ac adaptor input and if thats got the daisy chain in it, where would you place the 12v power? :)

  17. I was under the impression that the daisy chain referred to the input/output not the power...OK...so what exactly causes the bypass? I know I should just get the mod, but I'm curious. I didn't notice much of a difference between battery power and my 9v Boss pedal board power, by the way...maybe my ears aren't as fine tuned. The pedal itself is a totally different animal than my DD-7 way more "organic" sounding.

  18. oh ya referring to power supply chain not the audio chain.

So when you have a 12v aca powered Boss pedal on a 9v regulated daisy chain (pwr supply adapter chain) by itself.. its only receiving a stepped down ac supply (roughly 7.5v) thus greatly reducing its ability for a full sounding slap back not to mention its jrc4558 opamp being fed insufficient voltage.

When another 9v regulated pedal is placed into that power supply's daisy chain and shares the ground in that power cable, it suppose to bypass that resistor/diode in the delay pedal.

While that is a safe operation and I have used that in the past, it is my opinion that the pedal performs its best with the R3 resistor removed and jumpered. I've got another DM-3 coming in the mail and I am going to attempt to measure the incoming voltage in all 3 scenarios.

  19. I'd be interested in the results...thanks for the explanation.
