What’s the name of the effect pedal that…

1

What's the name of the effect pedal that makes humbuckers sound like single coils? I've seen a couple of different makers...

Has anyone ever tried one of these pedals and do they work and sound alright? Thanks!

2

Doesn't Seymour Duncan make the "Pickup Booster"?

3

Thanks, troy6120...that one does the exact opposite of what I'm looking for. It supposedly can make single coils sound like humbuckers...maybe if I hooked it up in reverse somehow...

I'm looking for something that can make humbuckers sound more single coil...I thought I stumbled across something at one time.

4

Electro-Harmonix has the Knockout pedal that makes HBs sound more single-coil-y and Single Coils sound more humbucker-y.

5

Yes, Big_Burly!!! I just found it.

knockout

Anybody ever try one of these?

6

Why dont you just put coil tap tone pots in? then it will be truly single coil. Since I did my Les Paul, its so much more versatile!

Cheers!

c'mon a guitar is just something you use to listen to guitar pedals and amps. Kinda like a steering wheel on a car.

11

Very funny (not)...There's a handful of songs in my bands last couple of sets that would sound better with a single coil sound. Instead of switching guitars mid set, I thought I would try this pedal to see if it worked for me. Thanks for treating a long time GDP member like an idiot.

12

And insulting my intelligence, too...

I thought this was a "forum" where fellow guitar players can talk shop.

I find it insulting that someone would post a picture of a pickup or an e.q. when I had a specific inquiry about a product that may be useful to MY effects pedalboard. No one bothered to ask me what sort of application I was going to use this effect for or anything of the like - just humor at my expense. I own guitars with both single coil and humbuckers, so the picture of the pickup was not really helpful, Jackass.

Some of you need to check your "Holier Than Thou" attitude at the door, IMO.

Doesn't a Varitone switch mod do something similar? Snarling Dogs used to make a pedal that was basically just the Varitone circuit in a pedal form. It was pretty cool.

Some people need to remember their sense of humour when they fire up the auld computer.

It's the internet, it's not serious.

BobbyR: The Snarling Dogs pedal is called the Very Tone Dog ("varitone" — geddit? Not a very good joke). It is exactly as you say, a five-position (plus by-pass) rotary varitone switch but with two selectable tone ranges, giving ten tone variations in all.

I've had one for years and for the right application (i.e. used sparingly) it's an interesting device, although I'm not sure it makes humbuckers sound like proper single coils — more an assortment of honky out-of-phase sounds with a greater or lesser degree of bite. It presumably uses some sort of choke: how, I've no idea.

Mine has never been very reliable, I'm afraid. Sometimes, when the slider switch is in the 'bite' position, the rotary does nothing. There was an online forum some years ago where the design and function of this switch on some versions of the pedal was discussed at length. But when it works, I love it.

Paddy, I have a vintage EH Knock Out EQ listed in the garage sell section.

Oh, so it's my fault, Tsar? I apologize for being so serious. I'll try to make you the butt of the joke next time and see how you like it.

I think the guys who posted the eq and single coil pics were just kidding you like a friend kids another friend . Thats how I read it, anyways.

22

BTW, theres a YouTube vid of a dude demonstrating one of those knockout pedals. It seems to work OK, but its nothing that an EQ couldnt do.

Mondays are tough days on some folks! I only read the humor and it really was non-directional other than it was in your post. But the written word can very often become an unintentional combustion point from which it is hard to retract.

Thought there were some good suggestions.

What's humorous about a pic of a single coil pickup or and e.q.? Obviously nothing. The humor is in the fact that a couple of GDP members are saying the ONLY way to get what I'm trying to accomplish is a single coil pickup, or an e.q., which can do the same thing. So even for me to explore a different option is naive and stupid. And I guess if everybody here finds it humorous, then many of you are apparently finding humor in my stupidity.

BTW, I realize this pedal is merely an e.q. and most likely "knocks out" mid frequencies to get the single coil tone (thus the name). I just wanted to get some reviews of it here. I don't care how anyone else "interprets" what those pictures meant, what matters to me is that I felt insulted by it.

Paddywagon - you've been here two years friend - you know the drill by now surely! In threads such as these there are always a couple of guys who like to crack a little gag - then the thread goes on with the rest of the bunch attempting to give out useful information. Nobody is making fun of you - or questioning your intelligence.

The thing is though - Pseudo and SnorkelMonkey are half-joking: the equalizer could likely do the job better and the P-90 would probably save you a lot of hassle in the long run. The humour comes from the idea (as I see it anyway) that both guys 'lazily' posted pics of 'lazy' solutions that could work out just as good as your own idea. There's certainly no malice intended. And there's certainly no malice intended from me either. Well, I do have a small bit of malice intended. Just a wee bit. Get some. Get some malice.
