The Clapper - Clapton 25db mid boost in a pedal

  1. Eric Clapton's Stratocasters have an internal 25 db midrange boost circuit that he uses for solos, instead of a pedal. It is controlled by the 2nd tone knob. I decided to make it into a pedal. Pretty cool!

  2. I'm curious to know, what is the center frequency and bandwidth of the midrange filter?

  3. Oddly enough, that doesn't seem to be documented anywhere.

This site has a lot of info, though - http://www.areyouexperience...

  4. Josh, make me one please!

Couple months ago I worked on a early pewter EC sig Stratocaster a client brought in, and loved it after I got it up and running. Turns out the battery just needed replacing. Lol

  5. Paul, I can do that. I'm gonna save up to buy the parts to do a small batch of them. My second good guitar was a Candy Green Clapton Strat, and I still have it. The effect is great for the Clapton/Buddy Guy sound.

  6. I have to give you an A+ for the coolness factor, Josh.

  7. sort of liked the cocked wah effect

cool that you used strat knob!..nice touch

    cheers

  8. Great idea and name! I love the final product :D

  9. oohh yikes...fender ownership is all over that circuit. :) "Fender Clapton PRE-AMP KIT MID BOOST 25 DB UPC Part No. 005-7577-7000, 717669160210"

meehhh, you'll be fine! just call it the Cleric Claptain and duck when the gear pages law nazi's attack :)

..although Clapton might show up here and buy one from you. its happened before.

    ;-)

  10. Of course I'll be fine. I never claimed to invent the circuit. I bought if fair and square from Fender and put it in a box. Fender can't say what I do with it after I buy it.

That's solid advice on the name, though!! Thanks, Tavo!

  11. put me down for 1 ,,,,,,, !!! let me know how much you need

  12. Available for $125 shipped in US. Keep in mind that there is no "Unity Gain" setting. When the boost is on, there is always an increase in the signal, even at the lowest knob setting. It's the Clapton sound!

  13. Cool pedal - as mentioned, I like the Strat knob!

  14. just call it "Clapped." "Clapped ON (heh heh)...Clapped OFF." and in a pre-emptive UK humour strike, when the battery dies it'll be Clapped OUT.

  15. :D
  16. Co-Caine ?

  17. I've been debating putting one of these in my Corvette. There is already a battery cavity but right now I have nothing in there. I'm guessing it will really beef up the 60's HiLotrons and make the guitar more versatile. GFS has a version too but I'm not sure how it compares to the original Eric Clapton version. What do you think? Should I do it?

    I love your pedal!

  18. Thanks! Buddy, The EC boost is a peculiar circuit. It colors the sound a lot, and really gives the Slowhand compression and saturation. It works really good with passive pickups, so no worries there. I've never heard the GFS version.

  19. I've been looking for any diagrams or accounts of people having put this unit into a pedal as I was interested in buying/making one myself and this is all I've found so far. I became interested as I heard Ty Tabor put the preamp into a rack mounted unit after he stopped using the '83 Elite strats. I'm assuming since sources said "pre amp" that he did it to the MDX mid range booster and not the TBX treble/bass expander that was in the Elite. Anyways, I'm definitely interested in acquiring one.

  20. Claptone?

I'd be interested to know the center, Q, and boost as well.

  21. I'd just call it The Clap and see how quickly it spreads.

  22. Damn you Mike. I was going to say that. You have to call it 'The Clap.' There is no other way.

Your tagline could be 'Catch the Clap!'

  23. Or, the GF just suggested 'The Eriction.'

  24. I should have sketched out how I wired it up. Unfortunately, I sold it without doing that. :( As I understand, the boosted frequencies centered around 700mhz.

  25. Link...

It was when Ty switched to Mesa dual recs during the Dogman era that I really became interested in incorporating the boost into my rig. Especially when I heard that after moving from the Elite strats that he had those preamps turned into a rack unit so that he could retain some of the sound. The only real difference (asides rack vs. pedal) between what he did and what you're doing is that his were the 12db boost instead of the clapton 25db.

I can keep searching online for diagrams, but I'm also just as content in seeing if you can hook me up when you're able to again.
