Take your pic.....

So who here uses picks? I do a bit of each, usually have the pick and then add some fingers where possible (for me). So just out of interest does anyone (like me) have a favourite type of pic over all others? I always use Jim Dunlop nylon .88's. Just interested to see what others use...contemplated getting a silver-peso (a-la- Mr Gibbons) pic off ebay just for a laugh.

I had a Dunlop that I loved, and kept it for over 20 years. Lost it a couple of years ago, when a friend from Austin came by for a couple of days, and developed sticky fingers for it.
So far, nothing else has taken its place, although I do have a few others laying around, but they're nothing special.

<--------- I used these way back in the 70's and loved them, still do. I found a bunch on the bay awhile back and bought them. They're a bit on the soft side but this seems to compensate for my ham-handed playing. I do have some thicker ones, I think they're Dunlops for the rare occasions I crank it up.

I have been using these Dunlop picks since the 80's. Bought a huge bag of them so I'm never out.....
I've tried others over the years but always came back to these.

Tortoise Shell Med & Heavy for me. I can never hold on to a pick when I'm playing under lights. Fingers get a little sweat & the pick is gone. Tort's are like the magic pic. A little sweat & they stick to the fingers.

I make my own. I bought a pic punch from pic punch dot com and it works great. I make em outta Starbucks cards and visas then sand em till I like em. Fun to bring to open mike nights. Bring a stack of empty gift cards and let the pics fly!

Generally I am a finger picker but there are some things you simply need to have a pick to get the right sound. I have a bunch of picks of different types and sorts. One old one is made out of tortoise shell which is not allowed any more I think. A couple made out of wood and even a button. I should take a picture of these suckers sometime.

I love these carbon nylon picks by Pickboy, 1.14mm. I came across them by accident and started to use them for mandolin but they quickly became my go-to pick. They wear nicely around the edges, have good grip and due to their thickness, you can use all different sorts of pick dynamics.

I ended up with a "rock picks" branded one which had a star shaped hole in the middle. This really helped to grip, particularly on stage under lights with sweaty hands. I've worn the thing out now & I can't find a supplier. Can anyone help? I've considered getting a punch to make holes in regular dunlop picks but no luck.

Fender heavy's, and by God, they are everywhere: Junk drawers, lint traps, basement, bar floors... on and on...
I bought a huge box of them several years ago and finally either lost them or threw them away on account that they are worn down to a nub!

I use Dunlop Tortex, mainly the yellows, greens and blues and occasionally Dunlop Ultex depending upon how I feel.
I don't get on with Fender California Clears as they just split and disintegrate on me.

I use Fender 358 Mediums, I got into using these after seeing a picture of Danny Gatton with them and as an added bonus no one nicks them.

For flatpick playing I use these. They're easy to hold on to, give a great twangy tone and you have three identical points in case the pick breaks mid song.
For thumbpicks, I use cut down and reshaped Herco mediums.

Herco Flex 50s. Made in the USA. I love the gripper surface.

I've tried a LOT of different picks from various thickness of the V-Picks to the very thin stainless steel, even have a shaped quarter. The picks that I seem to use the most often, (when not using just my nails) is the Dunlop ULTEX in the .73 thickness and I shape the tip to a bit more of a point.

I buy the Tortex picks in bulk and like them..................................................................................................
I had a bag of these that I picked up during the Namm show coverage on the GDP in 2008. I have worn them all out or given them away. I really liked the ones shaped like these. There were White Falcon logos, sign post logos, and Penguin logos. I would like to have more of these..................................................................
I am also fond of these due to their aggressive stickyness. Cool picks "coolcell" guitar picks 1.0 mm picks heavy. They don't like to let go of your fingers. I think I would play with these most often if I could. They cost 3 to 4 times as much as the dunlop Tortex, so I don't have a lot of these picks. I tend to be selfish with them and not share them with others.
