I belong to a guitar electronics forum as well as GDP. A few of the fellows there had a problem with the ball ends of strings coming unraveled and thus rendering the string broken. I have been fooling with guitars for 63 yrs. and this has happened to me only once. When I put strings on my dumpster Gretsch. My only thought at the time was hmm never saw that before. My string was an Elixer, but the other fellas have had trouble with D'Adarrio's. Anybody here ever had this problem? Seems to happen on the initial tuning. Thanks ...Lonnieboy
That's exactly what the fellow said D'Addario's said it happened to him with four straight sets they said they would replace them but three months now no replacements
Someone a while back was having this issue with several Ernie Ball brand strings. I use Thomasticks, GHS and Dean Markleys and never had a problem.
I take that back, once, while I was bending the ball end on the B string of a set of GHS Eric Johnson Nickel Rockers for my Corvette, the ball end snapped off. I bought them online at Strings and Beyond and sent them an email to see if I could get a replacement B string and they sent me a whole new set for free. Now thats good customer service!
Funny. In over 30 years of playing, I've been pretty loyal to D'Addarios, occasionally, buying other brands such as Dean Markley when I come across a particularly good deal. I've found D'Addario's quality control to be really consistent. I've always had bad experiences with Ernie Ball strings breaking at the ball end, to the point where I sent them a letter with the broken strings and this photo...
Hmmm.... I have never had this problem. Maybe there is better quality control with left handed strings... You know fewer sets made with more attention to detail.
After 45 years of not having this problem. I suddenly had it repeatedly as soon as I got my Gretsch Anni. It was the non Bibsby tail at the time. Always the high E string. I thought it was the Ernie Ball, but other brands did it too.
It turns out it was caused by a sharp edge in the tail where the string ring seated. I broke the sharp edge...Problem solved!!!!
I was having trouble with the B and high E strings breaking at the ball end on my Mosrite, D'Addarios I think. I now run a little solder over the twists before installing new strings and haven't had any more problems. I think D'Addario now offers strings with this already done (for about $1 more per set).
Wow that means they know that they put out shabby stuff but for a little extra they will give you a product that works. Remind me never to buy D'Adarrio's
Got fed up with Ernie Balls for this reason, I've had this problem with Martin, D'addario but the worst string issue I ever had was with a set of Fender Bullets - four of the strings had no ends at all.
Never had the twist fail, but I've had the ball fail on D'Addarios more than once. Both times were on strings that were long overdue to be replaced anyway, so I just took it as the universe telling me to maintain my gear!
Never had a problem with defective strings yet. I use mostly D'Addarios, some Gibson, some Gretsch, have used Ernie Balls and GHS but didn't care for them tonally.
The thing I love about the TIs that I get for my Falcon is that the ball ends on the wound strings are also wrapped with silk as is the other end that goes through the tuning pegs.
Twice with a DR 10 gauge. Not through overtuning (which I once did stupidly and accidentally in a hurry trying to tune the G string on my Explorer once but was turning the D peg instead...)... just barely got the thing on and snap!
Once was very recently, I should get around to emailing them about that...
I had it happen with an Ernie Ball string once too, but I forget the gauge or type.
I've never had this problem. I've used D'addario on some of my guitars since the 80s. Actually, I've never had much breaking problems with any brand of strings at all.

Yes, I've had that problem withD'Addario 10's three times over the last 4 years or so. Never with D'Addario 11's or 9's..
never had that issue , thats a new one on me !!

Yep, I have had it happen with D'Addario's. I've never run in to it with a different brand.
Never yet, and I use D'Addario 10's on a B7, B3C and G-tailpiece.

Nevet had strung break/unwind at the ball end. I use EB's 99% of the time. D'addarios dont sound as good to me.

Never had one of these D'Adarrios come loose!
Fender and Dunlop strings are good. GHS strings are really good when they're good.

New one on me...
