I also have one of those cowboy straps.
They do look cool, but its very uncomfortable, mine is hanging on the wall, best place for it.
I got sick of that buckle hitting the guitar everytime i lifted it or sat it down.

i use a 21/2 in. strap-no buckle, and the adjustment is at thev back.on the front part of the strap i have mounted a chineese dragon-american eagle-t.c.b.pin-to add a bit of fancyness (new word) to the front.
good luck

Buckles ... brrrrrrr!!!!
All my straps are either nylon web with plastic adjustable "buckle" or the kind with a separate piece that threads through a series of slots to achieve different lengths. Metal hardware in close proximity to a nicely finished guitar just plain makes me nervous.
DITTO DITTO DITTO DITTO DITTO
I keep the buckles in the front...and I usually have to cut some of the strap off
That's what I do as well....I have 3 Gretsch straps, one of each color, for my 3 Gretsch guitars. I remove about 3 inches or so, drill a new hole, trim the leather to look properly curved at the end, and proudly wear that jewelled thing-o-beauty in the front, where it belongs. And it is supposed to whack the back of the guitar everytime dangit.
Seriously, though, when i got my first jewelled strap, I too noticed that the strap was too long to use the buckle in the front...so I did a little research. I noticed when looking through Jay Scott's book that all of the old catalogs of Gretsch guitars had the western straps pictured withe buckles in the FRONT, (and also some long leather string like things...like what would hang from a cowboy's holster, I guess...)...
.but new Gretsch catalogs all show the strap , when attached to a guitar, with the buckle in the back...hmmmmm...

Buckle in the front= more tone.
Chet wore his Gretsch Buckle on the front ...
A nod to another thread that I just saw ...
The prices for vintage straps are crazy, so I don't use mine ... I'm lucky that this one came with my 6121 ...
Sorry ... I know most of you have seen this picture before ...
