Equalizer pedals (emulating a single coil sound)

Any use one??
My band does a number of songs that were originally done on a guitar equipped with DeArmonds or P90's. I have a P90 guitar, but none with DeArmonds or Dynas.
I'm wondering if I could dial in a sound similar to a DeArmond with an equalizer pedal. I was playing around with a Boss EQ pedal at guitar center, and was able to get a convincing twang out of the shredder guitar they had at the demo station. I was thinking if it could do that with that particular guitar, then it could work wonders with a Filtertron.
So anyone using an EQ like that??

Short answer. NO!
I knew this guy who never understood the need for different pickups. He believed he could get any sound he wanted by adjusting the EQ. Take a guess how his tone was like.
Your Filtertron will never sound like a P90, Dynasonic or whatever. If you want a Dynasonic sound, get a Dynasonic.

Yeah, I know it'll never sound 100%, but I can't afford another guitar right now, and if I can get a passable sound using an eq it'll do until I have the scratch for a new guitar.
I have a Reverend with P90's that I use as my backup, and it does a great job on the songs I'm referring too, but I hate switching back and forth.

What's the consensus on a solid-won't-break-the-bank pedal? Boss GE-7?
-

I've got a GE-7 with the Humphrey mod, but I've never tried to totally change the character of my pickups.
Twangier? a bit. More treble? Sure. Cut some mid out of a TS pedal? Yepper.
A friend has the MXR 10 band EQ. Knowing what I know now, I'd probably buy that one.

I've "heard" the GE-7's need to be modded due to stock being too noisy?
-
sroux
Yeah, the GE-7 was the one I tried. I was able to get some pretty serious twang our of a humbucker, and by jacking the treble a bit, had some nice twange working.
Hey Fieldhdj...what's the Humphrey mod? I know that GE-7 has a million mods.

Dang - don't mean to hijack this thread.
I'd be darned if you could pull off the EQ trick you're trying sroux. Any other possibilities? Do the tunes fall flat not having a Dyna or DeArmond? What songs?
I know we as players get very hung up in our tone but your average bar goer/audience member is going to blink.

Nah....they work fine with Filtertrons, just trying to be a bit more authentic, and I was brainstorming. Honestly most of the songs (mainly obscure rockabilly from the mid 50's) sound like P90's.
You're right about your average audience member, I could be slinging a Parker Fly and they wouldn't even know the difference....!

It actually works a little better the other way around - between the two coils in any humbucker, some frequencies get cancelled out.
When you look at it that way, a single coil is more "full-frequency", so the EQ treatment should work better - you can't boost or cut frequencies that just aren't there to begin with.

True 'dat!

Setzer
I've got this old EH KnockOut EQ that does a pretty good job of making a single coil sound like a humbucker and a humbucker sounding like a single coil:
The Attack Equalizer was designed to allow the guitarist to "convert his Les Paul into a Fender or vice versa."

Apropos of nothing in particular, I recently went to a press conference given by a company that makes electrical test equipment. On the way out, the company's PR lady — who knows I play guitar and dabble in home recording — gave me a badge. It says 'Love Hz'.
Oh, and I'm with Setzer on the EH Knockout. No, it won't make a PAF sound like a Dyna (or vice versa), but it does give a definite shift in tonality. Worth a blast.

Not that I've much to add regarding graphic equalizers, but I can remember playing one of those shredder guitar thingys acoustically (a fairly pricey one) and thought to myself..'ye know what, this is the kind of snap and twang you'd be looking for in a tele'.
Of course, then I opened my eyes.
Sorry for the derail.

Have you ever noticed how nearly every one of Billy Gibbons' guitars sound exactly the same? No matter what pickups are used and with 7s no less! He EQs everything.

that's a lot of "scooping" you'd be better off just getting a single coil of some type, you'll end up losing tones you want to keep

sroux, I see you eventually bought a 6128 with Dynasonics. What did you try before that? Any success?
I would like to see what that Knockout does.
Can you do something with an adjustable wah?
Boss has a "Pickup Simulator" on some of its products.

Hammerhands...yep, got a great deal on a Jet!
Pretty much gave up on trying to emulate singles. You can do it with an equalizer to some extent, but it sounds a bit "fake"
If I could only have one guitar (shudder to think!), I might use something like that Boss Pickup Sim.

There's a bunch of videos on the Knockout reissue.

A wah just sounds like a wah, limited range, it's like a bandpass filter and you won't hear all the lows and highs.
I think you might be talking about that pickup thing with the Roland/Boss guitar synths and similar, with a special pickup and very expensive.

The pickup simulator is in multi-effect units like VF-1 and the GT-10. I'm surprised the AC-3 doesn't do this.

I came across this thread the other day asking the same question. So I decided to do a little test.
I ran a guitar with humbuckers up against one with dynasonics. Using an a/b box and a multiband eq I was able to dial in the dynasonic tone to a tee by boosting the treble a little bit, lowering the mids a bit and boosting the bass up some. I had to back off the gain on the eq as the HB's come through a little hotter. It even had that clear as a bell shimmer. When I bypasses the eq the humbuckers lost that bell clarity. Amazing.
Loads of "Duane Twang" from the humbuckers btw. I was surprised. I've never bothered to do that and I wish I had a long time ago. Thanks for posting this.
Now I need to a/b the dyna's up against the filtertrons.

WIREDTURTLE here SINCE2002
ever thought about ordering a split coil powertron+? I've got a split coil supertron in the bridge position of my spectrasonic and use a pot to bleed off one coil to ground instead just a boring on/off switch.

I used to use a GE-7 to get a bit more twang out of my Filtertrons, raise the 3rd tone slider just a tad and lower the 5th one likewise.
In the end though I went out and bought a DSV and put T-Armonds in it

I would suggest the MXR 10 band eq's. I've owned the Boss GE7, and the mxr seemed more musical and seems tuned to just the right frequencies, at least to my ears.
