So, I'm looking for a pair of powered monitors for a home studio...I'd like to spend less than $200 for the pair. I think there are alot of options available, just curious if anyone has any tips or monitors to check out.
thanks,
zach

I went with the KRK Rokit5's - which I know are a tad more expensive - but I like them a lot. From the research I did and the people I talked to, they seem like very good quality for their price range. For what it's worth. I'm sure others will chime in.
I really like my Event Alp5s. No equalisation so they need to be in a decent sounding room, and they're fairly small so the bass end won't satisfy any dance herberts. But they have absolutely exceptional left/right and depth imaging. I've worked with countless monitors during my years as a pro engineer, and for the price they're the best I've heard. So that's why I bought a pair.
i know not of a beast.for me i don't trust pwered monitors.as one of my old school instuctors said one day, "todays mixes are just way too bright" while events sound amazing at any price, can you trust what your hearing?,kinda like mixing low end on ns-10's.......
I just bought a pair of M Audio BX5a but they were around $300.00. Everything I listened to in the $200.00 range sounded thin. These aren't great but they do okay for the price.
Like Jimbodiddly I went with the KRK monitors. I have been happy with them but am not a real heavy user. Home type stuff. Luck. Don
Point taken cyclopssam. But plenty of awesome mixes have been made on NS10s, AR18s and even Auratones back in the day. A big part of mixing is learning your monitors and your room.
As for today's mixes being too bright, I don't think that has anything to do with contemporary monitors - powered or otherwise. The implication would be that active monitors are too dull, so engineers compensate by adding top end. Do most powered monitors sound dull in comparison to NS10s to you or your instructor?
Shuggie
well?...yes/no. i think it's more the technolgy of the day,no not as dull, but! with more&more mixes being done w/ diffrent reverbs(3k&up,) with the advent of protools things can kinda get out of hand quickly!.when i think of NS10's i think ear fatigue,ha& your bottom end surprise(boom the trunk!!)LOL!! my instuctor was tom bates,if you know who he is?(nobodys studio slouch!)

oh....we used events in our classes,so.....ha!i can't think of anything for 200$ a pair??,but who knows? i'm so "out of the loop"&so out dated
I'll agree about today's mixes. "Too much information" is what I call it. I think it's a lot easier, with Pro Tools and other digital packages avaialble now, to keep (and enhance) high-end detail. The tendency to put everything to the front, so to speak, is a part of what you're calling getting out of hand? The bass player wants to cut through, everybody wants to cut through... I think younger ears may enjoy the extra stimulation but I, as an old codger, don't always appreciate it. Makes the music get on my nerves---even stuff I really like otherwise. Times/tastes changing along with the medium? I don't mind background parts staying in the background--even if that means I may miss some cool little bits. The overall package comes first. I'm not Phil Spector about burying individual identities, but there's room for some restraint---even in remasters of a lot lot of old recordings.
Great thread, as I'm needing to invest in some near-field monitors soon. I don't mind going first class with guitars and their accessories, but I'll fly coach on all the other gear when I can!
CnW, on class assignment was bring in some of your works for critque.....so i brought in my ratty dats pluged it into the 100,000$ protools rig,and what do you know it sounded GREAT!! my critical lestening monitors are a pair of alesis 2's,but mainly i use optmus for general mixing back&forth...a good monitor amp will go a long way! i have my trusty hafler, best piece of gear i've ever bought! makes everthing sound like gold!(or shite) depends on..... let's just say it's true!
(((((IMHO)))
GC has KRK-5's on sale for $99ea !!!
"when i think of NS10's i think ear fatigue"
cyclopssam, didn't Tom Bates teach you how to wrap tissue paper around the tweeters? It makes them sound really GREAT!
huh?....hey shggie,
nah, he didn't mention it,ha! that man has more sonic knowlage & tricks,it was amazing!,just to sit&watch, besides i'd just asome use a consumer model saves me the time of running to a car to reflect on a mix,ha!
I'm going to give another vote for the KRK Rokit5 powered monitors. I went into GC and tried to listen to them all (which weren't even hooked up) and not only were the KRK's one of the cheapest, they were also the clearest and punchiest. I'm a pretty heavy user and they've been standing up for the last 6 months or so. I say for 300 bucks you can't really go wrong.
