Can you recommend a P-90 for a junior?

1

Building a LP jr. inspired guitar right now. It WILL get a single dog eared P-90 and I am looking for recommendations.

I have a T-90 in the bridge of my electromatic jet, I don't think that is what I am looking for with this guitar as it is pretty damn bright.

My preferences for pickups have always been a more vintage wind. I find anything over 8K drives the front of my amps too hard. As an example I tend to prefer neck position PAFs in the bridge. I also realize that a hotter wind produces more low end, which is a good thing in a single pickup junior.

As for magnets I seem to prefer alnico 2 over 5 in PAFs, but I don't know how that crosses over to single coils. I genuinely love the Alnico 2 Surf 90s I have.

This is a rock and roll machine after all so I am willing to step outside of my comfort zone and go with things I usually avoid but am looking at the Armstrongs based on BZ's kind words about them.

What's your say? Which p-90 would you want in a junior?

I like the 50's Wind Lollar; haven't tried the Armstrong. I like the stock Gibson pickup, too, although it can be a bit "hot."

Artec makes a low output p90 that a lot of people replace the stock Casino pickups for. They sound great and are pretty cheap. The stock p90 in my Gibson JR. Is 8.5k and still too hot for my love.

I vote for the Fralin noiseless P-90

vintage wind = brighter

Kent Armstrong vintage style.

Agreed. I have a Kent Armstrong dogear in my LP Jr., and it rocks!

Vintage sounding I'd suggest this. I started a thread on this but to sum it up this sounds excellent. That's the short of it. It ships from Woodstock, NY and didn't Santana play a LP jr. with a P90 in it there in 1969. Maybe that's a sign this is for you.

Carlos played a Gibson SG Special with P-90's.

Love my P90 guitars with pure nickel strings. Stock gibson P90 in my LP goldtop sounds great with nickels to warm them ip.

I vote for Gibson or Kent Armstrong. I've tried both and I like both.

Thanks for the tips. I think I am leaning towards the Armstrong. The cheapskate in me also appreciates the low price.
