Hello, I am getting ready to add/upgrade from my Carl Martin Red Repeat to a more vintage sounding Echo/ Delay and need some help.
I'd love to get the Fulltone TTE, or the soon to be solid state SS-TE, but am looking into others such as TREX, SIB.
Anyone have other suggestions? I like the Tape Warbling Vintage Slapback. But maybe in a more easily carried stompbox. Thanks in advance.

Diggey, there's really only one. Roland RE-301.
Case closed.

That being said, use a Boss DM-2 or DM-3. Analog, bucket brigade, yada yada yada.
2nd best, fer sure.

The Boss RE-201 is a monster. It's a cool pedal. I've only played with it for about a half hour, and it's 250 bones, but it's sickening how awesome that pedal is.
I read somewhere recently that Scotty Moore uses a DD-3 with chorus to simulate tape. Not sure how the chorus works for that effect, but if it's good enough for Scotty Moore....

Do you guys have any more reviews of the Boss RE-20 Space Echo Delay / Reverb Pedal? I still haven't got to plug into one yet.
I bought a Boss DD-20 a few months before the RE-20 came out and I get good results with it but I'm still curious. Since the DD-20 mimics so many different types of delay pedals and is made by the same company as the RE-20 (and they were released consecutively) I have to wonder if the RE-20 is just a marketing thing, like the emulation pedals that have come out that emulate only one amplifier. "We'll just take one of the sounds, do the graphics like this...VOILA! Now instead of a boatload of sounds it's a specialty pedal! A mass produced boutique pedal, even! They'll want to collect them all! Doesn't it look cool? Damn right it does!"

I am most likely going to anger many folks, but will have to be honest. Please take this with being only my opinion.
Frankly, I've never liked Boss pedals, and I say this, I've never liked any. I've felt that they were too digital, or processed and are sterile to the tones and touch. Not the nature warmth.
Don't shoot me, I'm just being honest. Remember, one mans treasure is anothers trash.
I will tell you why though. I started playing guitar at 12 yrs old, way back in 1984. Growing up in the 80's and watching everyone swarm over the digital age effects, I found it hard to find old analog type of tones when I was a kid. (I loved Hendrix and Page and all of that.)
But on a kid budget in those days, you could buy DOD or Boss but nothing with real warmth. And the boutique market didn't exist.
Along this same line, even Rat distortion pedals were junky back then. I had one and yes it was the poor kids tubescreamer. Now they are the new "Tubescreamer 808" magically fairy pedals.
My point is, Is this RE-20 a sterile digital attempt at creating tubes and tape? Maybe?
Is it warm? I guess only I can answer these.
But Boss and I never gelled. So, any other suggestions? I want it for a slapback only, so I guess it will be a one trick pony and I have a Victoria reverb tank so the RE-20 would be truly for slapback.
And in that, I'd spend 250$ on a decent Echo/delay that was analog warmth and a one hit wonder. But hey, this is just me.
I may bite the bullet and just get the Fulltone. Again, it would be a very expensive slapbacker. I am concerned about the amount of tape they use and how long they last and how many will be out there in the world.
I also really like the T Rex. And SIB.

RE-20. It's pretty warm sounding to me and is way better than my Dano reel echo was IMO. I feel your pain with boss effects. I only have two. The RE-20 and the digital strobe tuner and that's it. I don't like 99% of their effects either. Go to the store and try an RE-20 out and decide for yourself if you like it or not...

What settings are you using on the red repeat? I have one and I think it sounds great.

Following up on Setzer's wisdom (though it was offered tongue-in-cheek), remember that tone-sucking is part of the point in good slapback. It's supposed to get indistinct and muddy. (But we can call it "warm" if you'd like.)
In that vein, you ought to order up a cheapcheap Dano BLT. (Possibly discontinued, Ebay type of thing.) It ONLY does one thing, and it does it pretty convincingly. The Dano PB&J is another handy Dano delay, which has an excellent slapback function as well, but it has more parameters to dial in and does a full second of delay. You might not need all that.
I know you're looking boutique. But slapback delay need not be a boutique function. I'm just saying, try the 30-dollar toys first. They sho'nuf sound analog. Nice and muddy!
Err...WARM!

Another vote for the RE-20. I just picked up another new one on ebay last night. $199 shipped...excellent deal considering everyone's dealing them at 250 or so. So now I'll have one in my board and another one that'll be easier to "access" when I need it and don't need all the other crap to process my sound.
For a simple slapback I'll chime in on the DM-2 or the DM-3. I've had and played with those for years; I'd probably still be using one if it wasn't for the input "gain" effect on the RE-20(really adds some growl to a Gretsch, kinda like a real RE-201...not quite there, but close). I still have 3 DM-2s and a DM-3 in storage...may have to unload 'em soon.
I'll also add a thumbs-up for the Dan-o BLT. I'll take it over any Dan-o delay product out there, including the Reel Echo(which I also have...I'm a delay junkie, can'tcha tell??) Like Proteus said, it's a basic fun little "toy" but it'll get you some good slapback. I've actually gigged with one with great results.
The choices are many...just my .02

I'm not a big fan of Boss pedals either. Except for the old yellow overdrives. I once swore I would never have any sort of digital stuff in my signal chain.
But that changed after the RE-20. I had to try it. The RE-20 doesn't sound anything like a digital device. I doubt if anyone can pass the blindfold test between an original 201 and the 20.
The T-Rex is also very good but it would be cheaper to hire an extra guitarist who will play everything you do 150 miliseconds later.

The red repeat is a great pedal but a battery hog if not AC supplied. Have you checked the carl martin site for settings?

To all you guys that have the Boss Space Echo what are the settings you are using for slap back? I can't get the thing where I want it. Trying to get Mystery Train to sound right, the Sun version any help?

Opinions are like, well, you know! For the money I likes my Reel Echo, It does what I want. The only person who knows for sure is you. I think if I was to get a new echo I would probably look at a Roland Space Echo. They do sound pretty good, but I would have to try it in the band to see if I really liked it.

Here's a shot of my "toolbox" I use onstage:

If you can make out the settings that's a pretty close slapback for me. I'd estimate around 125ms or so. Some guys would say that's too long but if I shorten it to 50-75ms I can't really notice it's even there. But this setting works very well for me.

That robot face on the bottom is creepy looking. Bleh. Too campy.
Anyhow, has anyone tried Setzer's settings on one of these cheapo repro's? I'd like to see an A/B of a real one next to the modeler and see just how close they got. I'm guessing close enough for gigs, but not for purists.

That's why Gawd invented black electrical tape... to go over the happy face.
As for best slapback... well, a real tape echo would be best.
Second best... the Boss RE-20.

I liked the Line 6 Echo Park...very nice slap back effect plus other effects built in like the swell effect.
I have an Ibanez AD-99 that sounds really great too...they're discontinued so you can only get them used.
The RE-20 is great so far. I avoided getting it for so long because unlike some other people here I have NO interest in trying to copy Brian Setzer's tone and I don't want to get any equipment, including blonde bassmans, that would make me even remotely sound like him. Note, I think Setzer sounds awesome I'd just rather sound like ME if at all possible.
I haven't been able to really put it through the paces...it's hard to play with toys when you have a 4 month old baby crying, sleeping, demanding your attention, etc lol.

It's all funny stuff this, i can usually get any slapback tone out of most any pedal i use!
I guess my ears are shagged!
Note; i don't actually have an echo pedal at the moment! Should never have gotten rid of my RE 201 ,it was the best of all the echos i've tried
