Dave,
I totally know how that is.
John Heat,
I agree a smaller wattage would prolly be awesome. My PV50 does sound good at "low" wattage. @ 2/12 on volume it can make the windows shake...

I haven't played any of the amps you originally mentioned, but I'll echo a vote for the Peavey Classic 30. Used, they're the most bang-for-the-buck amp out there, in my opinion.
A Fender Blues Jr. will also get you there, and should be pretty easy to get, even in NZ. Plus, both of these should sell easily if you ever decide to move to a bigger amp.
Unless you're leery of used, or of eBay, I'd find an eBay seller willing to ship internationally and save yourself some cash.
I have a Mesa 5:25 express. It is extremely flexible and can get anything from clean to very high gain. each channel has 2 modes, so you can tweak it until you find what you want. it is also switchable from 25 watts down to 5. I use it with my Gretsches, LP, and tele and it complements them all very well. The reverb is a little weak if you want surfy-style drip though.
Anni_lover: I don't know anything about your skills concerning soldering and electrics but this might be a solution for you...
A Fender Tweed Deluxe... DIY 15 watts point-to-point handwired. If you don't know how to do it... ask a friend.
A kit like this saves a bundle but you'll have a great amp for the rest of your life... no matter how young you are

JohnHeat, that kit looks great! There are no speakers in it, so the total price will be higher. What amp should I compare it with? (I think some Fender model) And how much cheaper is it?
PS: Good you did not stop posting here. We need guys like you. Hope you can control the "heat" somewhat
Those Li'l Dawg look like very, very cheap! Can we have some sound samples? In the end I want a full tube amp with Fender characteristics. I just love their clean...
GV: The cicuit is like the original Fender Tweed Deluxe. This will be my next project.. for a home-playing-amp... and smaller gigs. This amp works very well together with pedals and external reverbs.
The speaker is not included in the price but remember in the US you have a number of excellent dealers like Ted Weber, Mojo to mention two of them. My guess is that the prices is a bit lower than in Europe so I guess you can include the speaker in that price.
Ps. I have no problems in controlling the "heat" but when someone is pushing my back... I turn around and face him... like evreybody else would.
That thread came out so wrong because I didn't realize that you could say that a Gretsch guitar ... no matter the model... could have a short coming in their construction.
As far as I want I want to rely upon my instruments because on a tour I cannot call Gretsch company for a new guitar when a thing like taht has happened.
Well I don't care about it any more but I do have a sense of who is a friend or foe around here... so it came out quite good in the end anyway
I've had a play on the Jet City 20 watter and it's not too bad. I found there was a lack of clean headroom - more so than I would expect from a 20 watter. Great low volumes drive tones could be had though. Tonally it showed promise but I need to gig with amps before I can truly comment on worthness. Price was OK for what it was - here in NZ the head was $785, the cab $500 or something.
This just in:
An old friend who used to have a used guitar shop just moved back and opened another used guitar shop!
I took all my junk thatn nobody else would even look at, plus some good stuff, and traded into a NOS Traynor 40YCV!
I like it better than the Peavey Delta Blues (which I traded in on it). It's running two Sovtek 5881's (basically blackplate 6L6's like Groovetubes markets).
It sorta reminds me a bit of the Peavey ValveKing 50 112 I had a couple years ago, except that it's built in Canada.
The blackplate 6L6/5881 types breakup late for good headroom. I may buy some #4 Groovetube 6L6's for bluesier breakupage. The thing self-bias's itself for whatever you plug into it.
I second the Traynor suggestion. I have the YCV50Blue 50-watter, and they are the best kept secret in amplifiers - made in Canada.
Hi All, I'd second a vote for a Blues Jr. I have a friend with a Peavey Classic 30, but even after I gave him a set of Telam EL84s and NOS US made Raytheon 12ax7s for it it still sounds cold and shrill--better, but very raw sounding.
One of the best sounding amps I have owned was a Fender Pro Reverb. SF Pros can be had on eBay for very reasonable prices--especially compared with new or botique amps.
For new amps, the Vox Nighttrain really sounds cool and can be switched from 15 watts to 7.5 watts for smaller gigs without loosing its great sound.
The Fender Blues Jr is exactly what I'm going to trade in the 30w Orange Crush for. I'd love a Princeton Reverb, but can't quite afford it, and after owning the Frontman 212, I certain the Blues Jr will give me the sound I'm looking for.
The Jet City 20 watt Combo is the same price in NZ as the Fender Blues Jr - so I'll go with the Blues Jr.
I think you'll love the BJr.
Like the PR Reissue, it is the subject (I guess that would be 'object' really.) of endless speaker swaps, but both amps sound great to many players in stock form.
The pre-amp distortion on the BJr is pretty rough and raspy, as you might expect - but with some power amp drive it smooths out really well in my opinion.
Love the PRRI, and yes more pricey even in the US, but the used market is great these days. I think the PRRI is very brittle sounding when stock. I did some minor tone stack mods to mine to add a bit of midrange, change the shape of the bass control curve, and back the edge of the high end off a touch.
A classic PR mod is to add a midrange control, but I just changed the fixed midrange setting on mine.
The BJr tone stack can also be tweaked per the BillM suggestions and demo samples.
Good luck with the new amp. I think you'll find it more useful than the PR if you play unmiked with a bass and drums.
I know this doesn't do Anni lover any good but for you Socal guys IF I had the money I wouldn't even tell you about it! i have the 50 watt version of this amp and would love to have this to pair it up with!
Do you know if Top Hat has a NZ distributor? The one listed on their website seem to have gone.
Not off hand. I think guitarguynz had several Tophats so send him a PM.
My 2 cents of best value for the money: http://www.carvinguitars.com/guitaramps/vintageseries.php
Gibson. These other people are on quaaludes. Gibson.
You don't have a clue as to what you are talking about! Everyone knows real ludes are a hard find and it's been that way for years!
The Carvin looks nice... I would like to hear one in real life. It's so cheap!
7...1...4...
Crack, I meant you are all on crack. Or am I 20 years behind again. Maybe it is something in your water. Gibson.
thread derailed by stumble biscuits...don't see that every day...
That 35 watt Ambassador would spank your Gibsons and send them home crying for their mommy!![]()
That amp is on crack too. It couldn't handle a class A GA30RV much less an AB GA60RV 212 combo whose mommy was a chocolate godzilla. I deny the allegations, I deny the allegator.
Marshall. All you need.
