whew, enough fumes for one night. good thing I was prepared, the beers I drank will cushion my system! got the backs done, made it convertible closed/open back. will do the corners tomorrow afternoon.

UncleGrumpy
Nice. What kind of glue are you using?
-
Stephen Young
Good old contact cement, touchdown brand. same stuff I use when I do counter tops. I haven't found a water based contact cement I like.
Speakers are here. Going to have some lunch and finish those corners up!

Nice work, Stephen.
Sort of a dumb question, but how do you keep it flat?
Do you need to "roll" it with something heavy and round for good adhesion?
-
Stephen Young
keeping it flat hasn't been an issue. I have a laminate roller but i didn't use it. I just did one side at a time and smoothed the tolex from the table up to the top then rolled the cab onto the side I just glued. this glue sticks harder the longer it is in contact so you have a minute to readjust if needed. you cant pull the whole side back though without cleaning and regluing which is a PITA. my work table is plywood with a layer of carpet and the sheet just cuts down the carpet fuzz and I can pull it off and wash it, its great for projects like this.
I finished the corners and I think they came out pretty good considering the pattern and this is my first tolex job. the "diamonds" are straight which was my main worry. got the speakers in, handles and feet on. ran out of hardware for the back. still need to get new casters and sockets, old casters are worn out. Cab is much heavier with the new ceramic speakers in it but I am not expecting it to travel much.
Have a birthday party to attend tonight. Tomorrow I will finish the grill and get started breaking these guys in!

UncleGrumpy
That looks dangerous. In a good way.

I couldn't wait.... Got home from the party and busted out the grill. I wasn't sure if I could pull it together but everything started falling in place. I'm pretty proud of it. I think it came out great.
Played a little "mister sandman" just to hear it (on 1, everybody is asleep) I will give it a proper welcome tomorrow!

Er, some interesting looking bottles in the background. Interesting contents?
Oh, really fine cab, by the way. Love the look of that Ampeg diamond pattern.

Heh, those are just empties. I keep champagne bottles for Belgian beers. I brew beer when I have time. you can see part of my mash tun and boil kettle to the left in that last picture.

That looks great! Came out really nice!

I like me some Belgian beers! Fantome is my Fav Brewer. Nice work on the cabinet! Looks awesome!

NIce work! The corners look outstanding - is the tolex cut at the seam or is that a fold?
-
Stephen Young
All the seams are cut so they lay flat. Just fold and stretch the flaps around and use a speed square to cut the 45 through both pieces with a razor knife. I watched some guy on youtube do it.
Archtop: Fantome is great! My Favorite it probably Cantillion. I have a kriek lambic that has been aging under a thick pellicle for 3 years. Gotta bottle that someday soon

Good work on the corners Steve, I know it ain't easy.

Yup, the mitres look fantastic. Tell us a little more about those speakers, please.
-
RandyS
Also, does the head fit in the bottom of the cab?
-
Stephen Young
Thanks for the compliments!
The speakers are warehouse guitar speakers, 2 retro 30's on bottom which are celestion vintage 30 clones and 2 et65's which are celestion heritage g12-65 clones. This is the combo they recommended, I decided to go british with the 4x12 and do a 2x12 later with some more american sounding speakers. I put the retros on the bottom because they are a little more efficient than the et65s
The head doesn't fit in the cab, there is another panel that fits that space so it can be converted from open to closed back for different rooms/sounds. the cab and the head are pretty heavy. I don't know if I could lift both at the same time comfortably.
