tube amp longing

  1. I need your collective equipment knowledge again, my friends. I recently moved into a new house with my mother. My room is quite small. I had been on the fence with my tube amps of the time (a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and Blues Jr.). I needed more space and some money. I was working at Walgreens at the time and was not quite making enough money. So I sold them both. Now I have a new job, and my girlfriend and I may be moving in together. I would really like to have some of those sounds available to me again.

I'm not interested in getting the same amps over again though. Something in the Blues Jr. rattled when the volume was up, and the Hot Rod was only alright (and too loud).

I was hoping to get another tube amp eventually. I would like it to be 1X12, though I'm not afraid of 1X10. I loved the old Super Champ my brother had for a while. I'm not sold on the modeling amps yet. I was warming up to them, but I spent some time with them the other day, and I have to say, they aren't quite there yet. Also, the modeling amps I've played with did not have any sort of useable feed back. If you try to get a Fender Mustang to feed back, it just seems to squeal.

Anyways, I looking for something small. I'm not gigging anymore, so lower watts is desirable. The 15 watt Blues Jr. was definitely loud enough. I would like something that has a foot switch to go between clean and distorted. I never really play "clean" clean. My preferred clean was the Blues Jr. with the preamp at about 60%.

So what are your amp suggestions?

    • semi-clean channel and medium to heavy distortion channel (footswitch)
    • low wattage (well under 45watts)
    • 10 or 12 in speaker
  2. Carvin Vintage 16

bluesdj is selling a Carvin Vintage 16 that fits your description. I really like my Carvin Bel Air which is a 50 watt, 2X12 version.

A small Vox may also be a good amp to try but they are more known for their clean channel. I'm also curious about the new Fender Excelsior amps. There are a few threads on here about them.

  3. I haven't tried one yet so I can't recommend it but I've heard good things about the Egnater Tweaker. It sounds like it would be a match for you. 15w 1X12 and seems like it's focused on the dirty side of things.

  4. Marshall Haze stack. 15 Watts. Clean and dirty.

  5. Vox AC15

  6. AC4TVH - 4 Watt Class A Tube Head plus the 1x12 cab might be what you're after. I've not used one but at 4 watts, and a 12 inch speaker it seems like what you're asking for. Blonde too.

  7. The marshall haze is in he right area. Or something like the Peavey Classic 30 in a lower watt range.

  8. I'm a fan of the AC4 but it doesn't fulfill the requirement of two channels, hence the Haze. The Peavy is a great amp as well, but lower wattage means you're shopping for one of the Classic 20's floating around on flea-bay. You might consider one of the lower wattage Blackstar amps as well, but I've never played on in person so I can't comment really. The Haze I've been very happy with, albeit I do have the 40 watt combo. If I could've gotten the 15 watt stack at the time I would have.
