Small Cheap Tube amp ideas

  1. Well I have a VOX AD30VT, sounds great with the G6120 SSUGR. Also the line 6 Flewxtone IIIXL. IF I need a tube amp on the small cheap side, which would you recommend. I see Peavey Windsors, Bugeras. It has to be cheap. The Excelsior would be nice, but no reverb!!!!. I like the 15 inch speaker though. Yeah this is a bad topic, the Gretsch sounds great through what I have,, But Going all tube on a budget. Come on let me see what you have! Thanks Mark

  2. I've a Blackstar HT5R, It a 5 watt beauty that sounds great at low-ish volumes. Although if I crank it you really wouldn't want me as a neighbour. It's a fantastic amp, I did think about buying the 1watt version but it's size was on the trip over size rather than the dented shin size I was after.

  3. There's a pretty comprehensive list of 190+ small tube amps at http://www.jedistar.com/low_watt_amps.htm.

The ones that particularly appeal to me are the Ampeg GVT5H, Audio Kitchen Little Chopper, and Laney Cub,

  4. Yeah Thanks, almost did the 1 watt.. But I do think that at least a 12 inch speaker, ,to move that Gretsch Sound around.

  5. I have a lil Night Train with both a 12" and a 10" speaker, it's great for a apartment or bedroom amp. No frills amp but it does the job, pretty loud for a bed room amp also.

  6. I can't say enough good things about my 'Surprise Sound Lab' brand 'Rock Block' You can use it as an amp (1 watt) or as adistortion pedal. I also got their speaker sim (and go through PA) and it makes for a very small portable but tonefull set-up when required :)

  7. Champ 600? I liked the one I had.

  8. look into a used fender blues jr...they've made a ton of them, so there's got to be a big used market...new, they go for around 500$

tubes (2 el84-15 watt output), reverb and a 12" speaker...and mods galore for them

sure somebody here's got one they'd sell

here's one in a "western" motif-

    Link...

    cheers

  9. Used Traynor YGM-3 Guitarmate Reverb

  10. Mark - what, specifically, are you looking for in a small, all-tube amp? Are you looking for clean tones or some dirt? Are you aiming for low volume?

If the latter, a lot of us have tried to go down that path with mixed results. You can get cleans at low volume with an AC4TV or many others, but hard to get good breakup at lower volumes with tubes. Even with pedals.

I have an AC4TV that I use for cleans and with pedals. But when I went looking for low volume dirt, I struggled to find one that could do the trick. Even the Blackstar HT5 is an extremely loud amp. I bought one, brought it home and eventually returned it. Finally, I went with a high quality, analog solid state amp (Tech21) for that marshall at low volume sound.

  11. If I was looking for something on the small cheap side in that 10-20 watt range like an Excelsior, I'd be looking for a silverface Fender (Champ...), or a Traynor, or some other similar undervalued old hand-wired tube amp. Sturdy is cheap in the long run. It will need tubes, and it will need caps, but it will never really be dead. I bought my Traynor used for $75 in 1980 and I've got about $250 into it for caps & tubes (had it recapped & tubed in 1994), and a Weber speaker...over 32 years. That's cheap...like about $10/year.

Hmmm, I think it must be time for caps again. (Btw/ that's the Traynor YGM-3 peeking over my shoulder in my avatar.)

  12. Review in Guitar Player this month about I think 8 under 10 watt amps, including the Marshall 1 watters.

  13. Small, Reverb, 12 in. speaker and cheap is a rare combination. That is, if you want spring reverb. I'd say a Peavey Classic 30 though they do get loud. They can be had used for a couple of hundred or so. Otherwise most of the good small ones (i.e. Vox AC4, Vibro Champs, Night Trains etc.) have no reverb.

  14. Get a reverb pedal. Expands your choices.

  15. I was going to recommend the Blackheart Little Giant until I saw you want something in the 10- to 20 watt range. I own a head version of the Little Giant and I've been really pleaed.

The Blackhearts are really well made amps and great for modding. Check out the 15 watt Handsome Devil and the BitMo mod kit.

  16. Ok, I'm going to go against the flow here: try a Vox Pathfinder.

Not long ago soneone posted a shootout between it and a couple of popular small-sized tube amps. I was sceptical, but after doing the blind test I had to admit that the little solid-state Pathfinder blew the others out of the water for me.

Does anyone still have the link to that thread?

  17. I just happen to have that link. Blind Taste Test

  18. Haha Bob, you ARE the link.;-) Thanks for posting.:)
