Never thought I was gonna have GAS again. Thought I had everything.

Anyway yesterday at our gig I saw our new bass player's Fender Bassman 135 + huge 2x15 cabinet for the first time.

And there I was with my little AC15.

And, more seriously, I think the AC15 is not loud enough for outside gigs. In rooms it is, but outside it isn't.

So I am thinking of buying something else. I want Vox/valves because I love the Vox sound so much. Maybe a AC30CCH with a 2x 12 cabinet or something.

That would still be quite small and I'd rather have something BIG.

Any recommendations?

Aren't you normally be mic'ed up for outside gigs? I've never played an outdoors venue that didn't have a decent PA capable of mic'ing the drums, vocals and guitar amps. I always thought AC15's were plenty loud and sound great.

Outside it's not loud enough to use as my guitar monitor on stage, when I play single note type clean billy stuff, like early Cash.

With distorted Link Wray type solo's however it's loud enough.

I don't like relying on monitor mixes.

I used to have a room full of Maggies before they became so expensive and difficult to find.

Great amps, but once I picked up a vintage tube Standel, I sold everything off, including tweed Fenders, so that pic is just a memory, but still wonderful for the shock value! HA!

BUT, I still do have a Maggie 213, which is my favorite Maggie of all, but the 260 comes in right behind.

For CLEAN Billy / Cash playing, you could consider a Solid State Standel, you can pick them up cheaply because of the anti SS mindstate/brainwash, but some of the SS Standels are fabulous for country/pedal steel/clean clear tones. And they are LOUD.

Fortunately the clean billy is only a small part of our show.... So tho I am willing to investigate the purchase of a HUGE stack to create some headroom for some clean billy I don't need a clean billy amp.

AC-30 HW I was going to say "or others ac30 type variants" but matching up transformers to whatever wattage you need anyhow you would be better off sticking with Vox on this!

yeah a 2x12 combo w/an 2x12 extension for starters OR save some money and find a hiwatt FL100 the loudest 1x12 you'll ever come across.i've seen one bark down a marshall 800 1/2 stack of course all usable tones! just saying

I'd love to hear an AC 30 through 4 10s or maybe 3 10s and a 15 as an extension cab along with the 2 12s. I think if you have a mix of speaker sizes you could end up with a really complex and beautiful tone.

Seriously though, I play a Hot Rod Deluxe and it's pretty loud without a PA. We just played an outdoor show and I had no problems keeping up...defintely not the same tone as a Vox but unless you want to carry around a head and huge cab you might look into a decent tube combo of the same ilk...you probably don't need to be too much louder anyway, right?

These Tomahawk look really really cool but I have NO idea where I could see/hear one. Never heard of them before. They are definately not for sale in the Netherlands.

And no I don't need to be "much" louder, but just a tiny bit louder and looking cooler.

If an AC15 head existed those 4x12's would probably do the trick.

Anyway I made up my mind already; AC30 head, 4x12 cab. Unless somebody can tell me why not. I need Vox, I need clean, and distortion I do with a Bluesdriver.

It's just one extra walk to the car and lighter weight.

Long live China, long live Vox!

Oh, and, while the AC15 is definately loud enough, it's just not loud enough for clean 1 string things when outside.

I am gonna use the AC15 in another band where there's no need for clean 1 string bits.

My big iron is an ADA preamp and mosvalve poweramp into two marshall 410 cabinets. This has oodles of power on tap if needed. Those marshall 410s are cool cabs, come with celestion g10s, 8ohms for the whole cab, can be had for under $300, and sound awesome. Can leave them close backed, or open up the back for more omni-directionality. Closed back, they are way more directional.

But I also play a vox pathfinder 15R also into one of the marshall 410 cabs. Great sound with the amp run just a hair dirty, yet still sounds clean.

Then there's my vox ac30cc2x. More midrangey, but cool sounding. Loud as I'll ever need too. Again, with an extension cab, gives me plenty of go.

I think you made a great choice in the AC30 especially if you are going with the Custom Classic series. The AC15 Custom Classics left me wanting. The AC 30 CC is alright though. Not quite the Heritage but....

It Does! I have the AC30 version, which is incredible but I have heard nothing but good about the AC15.

Too many knobs and switches. I am lazy. I want somewhat distorted clean and crazy distortion and that's it. I don't want anything else.

Well when we play I jack scott song I turn up the tremelo manually. But I once had that useless AC-15 footswitch on stage and accidentally switched to tremelo and I thought my amp was kaputt.

The easiest thing to have is programmable effects on the amp and a midi pedal for switching. But then you have the problem that the programs that sounded great in the rehearsal room sound like shite at the gig.

I need constant slapback on everything, loud clean and on request insane overdrive. No more, otherwise I get confused.

You're among friends. I used to play a combo, but now here's my regular gigging amp. Besides the fuller sound, you also get that wow factor with the crowd.

I'd also like to have, one day, a Dual Showman on top of a vertical 2x15. That's a hot setup.
