Hi all,
I just made a clone of a Dumble Overdrive special.
It's perfectly quiet, no hiss, hum etc.
But she doesn't sound that good with my Gretsch. 
I was kind of hoping on a fender amp with a twist. Fender clean on channel 1 and a more boosted signal on channel 2.
Oh wel maybe I should tweak it more.
(or sell it and build me a vibroverb/superreverb clone 
)
Anyone have any experience with dumble style amps?

What are you calling me names for? Calling me dumb-le and asking for help is silly.....
I was into Soldanos for a while and though not exactly close to a Dumble at all, it did not play well with others........
Basically my Les Pauls sounding great, but everythnig else was almost forced cheese if you dig my meaning?
I seem to get better results with a Gretsch, a very clean amp and a dirt pedal then a dirty amp.
Hope it helps. I felt kinda bad you asked and no one spoke up. So I tried to relate it to me in some way.

I'm not sure I know what a Dumble "style" amp is. I know what a Dumble is but have never heard one in person, so I don't really get all the hype.
In saying that, I have never heard a Gretsch sound bad through any amp. It depends on what you like I guess, but I play mine (hollows and jets with Dynas and Filters) through Marshall, Vox, Fender and Ampeg and they all sound Gretschy to me. Now some combinations work better for certain things, but all of it is good.
What guitar are we talking about here? Which Pups? Does the Dumble sound like anything else? Do you like/not like the clean or the OD tone or neither?

Well it's not that it is BAD sounding but not great either. The clean channel sounds kind of muffled when compared to my '67 bandmaster clean sound. I can get a nice jazz sound out of the clean channel though. But the clean on the bandmaster sparkles more. I've tried my Silver Falcon (with TV Jones classics) and my Tennessee Rose (Tv Jones Magnatron in the neck, classic in the bridge possition) Also used a Stratocaster with Lindy Fralin pups. (this guitar sounds very nice on the clean channel)

Closest I've ever been to a Dummle is the model in my POD, and reading about Howard and his escapades in providing amps. I know they go for billions.
But how they're supposed to sound, or why, I don't know. So I can't be of any help!
But aren't they famous for a kind of mid-80s California overdrive, somewhere between Boogie and later full-shred triple-rectification? Like the hot fusion studio cats of that era? Not what I think of as Gretsch sparkle...
My only Gretsch-amp mismatch has been the Powertron-equipped 6118-125 with the EL-84-equipped Peavey Classic 30.
Hey Jezzbo, you hit exactly on the head my Soldano issues with Gretsch.
The clean channel was weak to say the least. The overdrive, was ....well to overdriven.
The only reason I spoke up was that they both are the "High Gain" variety. But you said it right on the head and nailed it with your Bandmaster.
I find a clean amp and add overdrive pedal, (I use a Frantone Hep Cat and only dial alittle grit) gives me the Lows, Mids, and Highs.
As for the Soldanos and LEs Pauls, or anythnig I've found with Humbuckers (SG, and es-335) that it will literally sing. One note will ring for 30 minutes.
I've put in NOS preamp tubes and noodled arround with it's internal OD trimmer but still no magic. To bad.
Oh well..., next I'll make a headshell for it and sell it.
hopefully for enough money to build me a nice vibroverb/super reverb amp
