Breakthrough! - Finally figured out reverb on my 5E3x2!

  2. Josh, that's good news. My Clark 5E3 was dead quiet too, and his reverb just added a little "hum" at idle.

    However, we tried the same on a Clark 5F1 Champ, and Boy Howdy, the hum was just too much.

    Michael said that the hum issue would be a concern on just about any "single ended" amp. Shielding was a real PITA.

    We took the verb out of the Champ, did some "dealing", and I ended up with a very nice Clark "tank".

    All ended well, but be careful with three knob verbs and single ended amps.

    Curt, No, you don't want to use the 6G15 at all. You want to splice the AB763 reverb section in between the preamp and phase inverter of the 5E3. And my reverb uses two 12AX7s, not 12AY7s.

    For the Vibro Champ, I would do this (yeah, you give up the vibrato, but there is limited room inside that chassis. Something's gotta go!) -

  4. Don't get hung-up with the differences between stand-alone reverb units (6g15) and interagted reverb units like what Josh has been developing. They are TWO completeley different animals. There's another nice reverb add-in project over at another forum that is also quite interesting ( Here's the Link... ). With the 'Surf' theme coming up for the NorCal/Nev RoundUp, I'm looking into what I'm going to try to put together for the event ... ;-)

  5. I had that Clark reverb unit in the back of one of his Tyger amps. No hum, and up there with the very best reverb I've heard. MD

  6. Yep, I'm on mac! Navigating the symbols menu is a bit quirky at first, but it's all there, and easy once you figure it out. It's my first program of this type (vector-based???), but I think I grasped it in one long session. Copy/paste works well, I just fill a corner with symbols I'll need and go to it. Faster than drawing by hand once you get it, and it's good practice to draw proper schems. I seem to learn more, too!

  9. Has anyone got a layout for a 5e3 with this reverb mod added on handy? I want to build one of these myself and if someone has already done the legwork regarding a layout then it'll save me some time.

Since 2008, I have been trying to engineer an add-on three knob tube reverb unit on my Tweed Double Deluxe (A Tweed Deluxe with 2X12" speakers and 4x6V6 output tubes) A small aluminium box mounts of the inside wall of the amp and borrows B+, ground, and tube filament power from the host amp. Other guys have done similar things, but NO ONE will share a schematic or layout. With my initial design, I could never get past just a weak, crappy, tinny reverb that barely did anything. After a year of "shelving" it, I sat down with a bunch of schematics and layouts and drew up some ideas, based on the blackface reverb, with the Tone and Dwell controls from the standalone unit. I stripped out my little box down to the tube sockets and pots, and started soldering. I built an eyelet board for the new design. I know my layout is not the greatest, and there is way too much sloppy wire, but it works and it sounds amazing!! Wet, drippy, and surfy! And the three knobs really do what they should. I can't WAIT to try it on a gig.

  14. Thanks! All you gotta do is get a Hammond 1590FL flanged lid enclosure and follow the layout I posted. If you are savvy enough to understand circuits, and study the AB763 Fender implementation, it will all make sense.

    Congratulations on figuring out this circuit. I'm just registering my very strong interest in seeing your photos/wiring diagram or schematic (seem to have fallen off the thread) - I have just built a 5e3 (my first build) into an old Peavey Classic 30 case and would love to make use of the spring.
