1x12 for Bassman

  1. Anyone using a 1x12 cab with their Bassman? If so, Is it closed back or open? Also how is the breakup compared to the closed back 2x12. Does the 1x12 allow enough of the Bassmans Mojo to shine or is it not worth the purchase. Im looken to bring the volume down and Im getten a little tired luggin the 2x12 round.

  2. I've played out with a BF Bassman in a 1x15 combo (open-back of course). It was loaded with a reconed JBL D130 with a paper dust cap. It's a great blues rig with both 'buckers (PRS) and a Tele. I think the impedance mismatch (8 ohm speaker, 4 ohm OT) helped to temper the volume a bit and the JBL keeps the breakup at the amp, not the speaker. I think a similar 1x12 setup would sound close, but maybe not as full since you're not moving as much air with a single 12.

Just playing at home now, and I've run my blonde Bassman head with an open-back 1x12 cab loaded with a JBL E120 reconed at 4 ohms. This thing is loud and clean, but you're not going to lose any weight with this speaker - it's a monster.

  3. If youre gonna use a 1x12 cab with a bassman it really needs to be a closeback to get the full response of the amp with a gretsch. I build a bassman 6g6-b type amp (just the normal channel) in a princetone size head cab.

and I had a request for a compact 1x12 so I ordered the princeton reverb combo cab for a 12" speaker. I have to say that is the most inefficient cab size for a 12" speaker and especially with a speaker that needs to be able to support 45watts.. I tried both my favorite (V30) and a celestion heritage G12-65 and they both sound like I'd laid the speaker directly on the floor and played the amp through em..

Consequently, the mesaboogie closeback 1x12 recto cab is amazing (not the best looking but its design is perfect for the Vintage 30 12" speaker and the amp has a full response. Not exactly as wonderful like a bassman 212 that I consider the voice of the amp at its fullest (with dual v30s) but real close at lower volumes.

mojotone has a great price on their closeback 1x12 loaded with a V30. $195 I think and shipping was free for a while. oh... a slightly more compact andl lighter tremolux 2x10 closeback cab is a good option as well.

  4. Yep - a Tremolux 2x10 closed back cab works great. That's what I usually use with the blonde. It's loaded with 2 Kendrick 10's.

  5. I can't comment on a 1 12" but I did recently convert my Bassman into a 2x10 combo because I wanted something lighter and something that didn't piss off the sound guys too much and it's killer. Definitely breaks up sooner for me. I went with a mostly closed back design and I'm diggin it. I feel that it still has punchy bass response but it's not as focused and some sound bleeds out from the back. Exactly what I was hoping to accomplish.

I went with a high powerd cermic Eminence Ragin Cajun and a lower powered alnico Weber 10A125 speaker combo. Also went with the new re-issue Tung Sol 5881 power tubes.
